It's been called that since the beginning. We had no idea that Sony's next system would be called Playstation 2; we had no concept of numbering game systems.

Also, I think there used to be a Playstation magazine called PSX.

    It's a 90's thing. We were obsessed with "X". Mega Man X, X-Files, Generation X, etc.

Using the portuguese word "fita", which is the same as "tape", to refer to a game cartdrige ("cartucho", in portuguese) is very common here in Brazil too. Back in the 2600 days, I asked my dad for "Atari tapes".

Why do people (worldwide, it seems) think cartridges are similar to tapes, I'll never know. But it was - and still is - the most common term for them in my homestate.

Yeah, all of the Starpath games for the Atari 2600 were on cassette.

    My wife calls CD's "tapes."
I guess it's no different than me calling a Dr. Pepper a Coke.

I have yet to encounter such a thing, but if anyone were to call a CD a tape, or a Dr. Pepper a Coke, I would be extremely annoyed.

I've never heard anyone call a CD a "tape", but "coke" is used as a generic term for soda in many parts of the US (especially the South).

I'm aware of that, and screw everyone who talks that way.

I remember seeing some Super Famicom games and they said "cassette" on the back, that probably has something to do with games still being called tapes.

I don't have any Super Famicom games now, but can anyone check to confirm this? Are all of them labeled "cassette"?

I've heard it used for another cola like a Pepsi, but never a completely different kind of soda like Dr. Pepper, Sprite, etc.

That's a Southern thing. I never remember hearing it in person in NYC in all my 36 years.

Cartridges have been called tapes long before the SF was released.

When I was a kid, I remember going out to dinner with my family. Asking what kind of coke they have. And a very confused waitress replying "diet, cherry, and regular."

    I wanted Dr. Pepper.

But then I was raised southern.

Hmm, I smell a food de jour topic being posted soon by porksta.

What I get annoyed at is when people ask stupid questions about video games or computers.

I actually used to get in trouble back when I was doing tech support phone calls for Earthlink because the people I dealt with seriously had mental problems. All the horror stories you have been told are all true.

"Thank you for calling earthlink, can I help you."
    "I can't check my e-mail."
"Maam, is your computer turned on."
"No, I just bought it, it is still in the box."

I am not kidding, that happened to me more than once.

Call it me owing 40k in student loans to be knowledgable about computers, but I get frusterated when I am asked a stupid computer questions because I have this wierd notion that if you are not willing to learn how to use something, don't use it.

I stopped fixing people's computers, but now tell them what to do in order to fix it. if they do it, it works, if not, then no computer for them.

Another pet peeve are younger people that seem to have never had any piece of technology around them as if they lived in the back woods of <add your own state with back woods> and now they can't figure out the most simple fucking thing with technology when there is a step by step instruction manual right there beside them so they call the computer guy assuming that I own the new 25,000 iPod and I am an expert with it. I open up their instruction book and show them what to do.

Call it egocentric from going to school, but I am in debt for that shit and pushed myself to learn it, and then there are people that refuse to fucking learn. A perfect example is another earthlink story that I have gotten multiple times:

"Thank you for calling Earthlink. How can I help you?"
"My internet doesn't work. Fix it."
"Maam, what is wrong with it?"
"I don't know. Send somebody out to fix it."
"Maam, we will go through some troubleshooting steps to help you fix this."
"No, just send somebody out to fix it."

    AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I lived in the south when I was younger and never used the word 'pop'. I live in the north-east now and say 'soda'. And only use the word 'coke' when talking about Coca-Cola. When I went to college in the midwest however, nearly everyone from the region (Ohio) said 'pop'. I remember thinking it was really funny..they did not.

So much for trying to stay on-topic...

A few friends in the midwest didn't know that a paddle was a controller.

    I thought that was weird.

I suppose that might - might - seem like a valid sentiment if, back in 2001, you were in 7th grade and your parents put one of these brand new machines under the Christmas tree. And now you're in college, pining for your roots. Sorry, junior. Come back in 10 to 15 years when the public utterance of the name of your console d'amour is the kind of thing that causes 14-year-olds to vacantly stare and say, "Uh...X-what?" Then you'll really understand "old school" and we'll have something to talk about.

Until then, I'm from the Atari 2600 generation, so get off my lawn.
Old-school drives me absolutely crazy. Probably because I used to work at a game store and would hear it used about 100 times a day in this context: "No way! They got that old school Nintendo! Remember (insert name of game that everyone remembers)?!" And then they wouldn't buy anything.

I once heard a kid say "They got that old school Nintendo!"but he pointed at a weird area of the store. When I looked to see what he was talking about I saw that he was pointing at a Nintendo 64. I died a little inside that day.
