Are other games working in the console? If it worked at gamecrazy, it should work fine at your house. If your xbox is indeed dirty, you can try a cleaning disk. Basically, it's a DVD with a tiny brush on it. Make sure you use a dvd lense cleaner and not the cd one because the xbox uses a DVD drive.

Once it starts to read some games and not others, it is the beginning of DVDrom drive failure 9 out of ten times. The other 1 time, cleaning the lens will solve the problem.

You've got nothing to lose by trying. The odds are good a cleaning will improve the drive's performance regardless. However, in my experience (2000+ Xboxes) a cleaning will just forestall the inevitable need for a new drive by a few weeks.

    Good Luck!

The only system to ever die on me was the original xbox... and this is exactly how it started out.

How often does that drive need to be replaced in your opinion?

A good drive will last 3-5 years under normal usage conditions. However, I've seen drives last as little as 6 months, and as long as 7 years, but have no knowledge of the usage habits of drives on those extreme ends.

Mod the Xbox, and use the HDD for games instead, and your DVDrom drive will last nearly forever. I can't remember the last time an actual disc went into my Xbox.

Optical drives wear out. All of them.

Problem is, they stopped making DVDrom drives for the original Xbox more than 2 years ago now.

Keep telling yourself that and all your problems will go away. Yeah, and my two dead x-boxs will suddenly start working again!
