This was already posted in the Classic Gaming forum a couple of weeks ago.

    Also, you wrote:

A fine fellow over here has released over 1000 of his protos on the internet. There is a torrent on that site you can use to download them. This is very nice of him because lots of people just hoard them and keep their value up."

Who are these people? Everyone always refers to "lots of people" or "rich hoarders", but no one ever names anyone in particular, or gives examples.

I tend to think people mean you, me, buyatari, assembler, etc...

As i've said before, i think people fail to account for scale. When you find a proto on the street, it's not too hard to get that one dumped and out into the public. You can dump 5 or 6 cart based protos without too much work.

When you have several hundred, it becomes a lot more work. Especially if you're working with disc based systems. You have to deal with the copy protection on each disc, you have to have space to store that much data, then you have to sit there while each disc transfers... it all takes a lot of time.

Add on top of this that the whole thing is illegal. While the games might be prototypes, they're still under copyright. Companies can and do get pissed off when these things leak. They think it hurts their brand image when early buggy copies of their games make it to the public.

You also have to be concerned that you're not hurting the developers who made the game. At some point, you're just adding to piracy. Beta or not, you can still be taking dollars away from the industry we all love.

Now the opposite of us hoarders is of course the fine folks at www.lostlevels.org . I can't speak for anyone else, but i personally have a lot of respect for what they do, even if i'm not able to emulate their actions.

ProgAce: Agreed on all counts, but yeah, I think people don't understand this is also not the number one life priority is getting all these things dumped either. I've worked with Lost LEvels and Drx on releases for awhile, and I'm curious to see where this stigma is still coming from. ESPECIALLY since the poster here just admitted he does not follow the proto scene, and changed his original post.
