How about Sega Saturn/Sega CD Jewel Cases?

those "like new" cases are expensive O.O ...and don't mention scratching/scuffing in their condition lists. 2 Dollars more for foam and you're at $8 per non cracked case with foam.

Some people over at the cover project ( http://www.thecoverproject.net ) have created covers that fit on standard DVD cases for some Saturn and Dreamcast games.

oh yeah, i freaking hate sega cd cases. a few years back i bought a lot of sleaed new courier crisis/hexen games, threw them all out and used the cases to my rare sega cd games. still have one or two id like to replace though.

i wish there was some other kind of sturdy case we could get that fit the game manuals in it ....

in addition to that i have like 10 messed up ps1 longboxes too... grrrrr non standard cases grrrr!

I always wondered why they went for such ugly and hard to maintain packaging... some of the first Playstation games also had this problem. Especially as the japanese games use standard CD cases...

Personally, I love those trays. I hated those stiff cardboard sleeves. They seem like they could scuff games.

For protecting the instructions and the game, I like those cases a lot. (Granted if you drop them they will likely break).

And nothing is more handsome (gamewise) than a shelf or shelves full of blue sega cd spines (throw in a striped Snatcher for highlighting if you want). I have about 100 of them and even people who are not into games are impressed by their appearance - much more so than my playstation, genesis or snes games. Not to mention the fact that it is a lot easier to find titles on that style of case than on a shelf of playstation games.

I have had pretty good luck picking up crummy games fairly cheaply (they tend to languish in thrift stores until they get reduced) for spare cases.

Someone should make a mold for it, and use a sturdier material. I love the cases, but damn they break easy.

thats what I've always done is buy a sports title or something and swap cases. When I run out of good cases to throw them in, I take my cheapest game and replace it with the next highest valued game so it kinda works out. Its even hard to find good cases at pawn shops and flea markets for sports games though.

I've been able to purchase cases of new games three times on ebay over the years. Twice it's been Quarterback Attack and once was Fighting Vipers. That's the best way IMO.

Like many others, I keep my eye open and buy good cases on the cheap. I've passed on commons for the system due to bad cases, it's just not as worth it knowing you'll be replacing the case so soon. Light scuffs aren't an issue to me, it's when those fine cracks appear, or worst a broken hinge.

As for the "standard" debate, read the little Wikipedia page on it and look under Legacy. For what it's worth, I was too young to know the whole deal but from my understanding long-boxes were designed to fit along with vinal records. Once smaller jewel cases were manufactured and vinal got phased out, there was no reason to keep the long-boxes in addition to the environmentalists debate. So if it's from my understanding, the Saturn and Sega CD along with 3DO and some other electronic units these cases were possibly from a surplus that needed to be cleared out.

I've made comments lots of times about how much I like the longer-boxes, how they stand out from the game collection, and easy it is to pick out what you want. It would be nice if there were a denser plastic production of these old cases for those that want replacements and others that want them for other media, as due to their volume you could easily stash lots of nifty media types inside. In addition, bring out some metal long-boxes like from the PS2 and Xbox. Yeah, I like metal cases too.

I've heard the longboxes were chosen because it was thought that standard jewel cases were too small to catch a consumer's attention on a rack. The longboxes have big, bright covers. When you get to Playstation and Saturn, part of the reason they kept them might have been because they were already used with 3DO/Sega CD/etc. The only reason Playstation even switched to jewel cases was to save money on shipping.
