Post Video Games Are Launching Rock-n-Roll Careers [Slashdot]

jillduffy writes "Steve Schnur, a high-level music exec at Electronic Arts, talks about how video games are launching the careers of top musical artists these days. Some of his examples: 'Avril Lavigne was first introduced to European audiences through FIFA 2003. Fabolous was first introduced in America via NBA Live, and went on to sell over 2 million albums here. JET got their American iPod commercial based on exposure in Madden 2004. Avenged Sevenfold were an unsigned act when we featured them in Madden 2004...' Schnur explains how the phenomenon is made possible by the new generation of media junkies, who feel a song becomes real when they 'play it.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Look out for my song, "Crying For Career," in the next installment of Rugby 2009.

*sigh* If only I could play an instrument AND contact a game company with a demo... or something like that...

I don't think I could ever buy an album from any artist on an EA sports games considering they have about 5 songs that play on a constant loop that makes you get sick of them by the second time you play the game.

I'm sure the people of Europe were overjoyed when Avril Lavigne first hit their ears.

One of my friends got into this rapper, 'Atmosphere', when I let him borrow my Fight Night round 3 for 360. Now its mainly what he listens to. We went and saw one of his shows in Rhode Island and it was such a great show.

All bad examples. Real examples of video game featured music that really broke out careers would be Dragonforce and Freezepop. Each definately had a strong fanbase but all hell broke loose when they first hit Guitar Hero.

Atmosphere was a good rapper before then, yet he'll never go platinum. It's easy for me to see/hear how some people will be known through video games but that's about as far as most of them will go. They'll be simply known. It's hard for me to imagine that many of these acts will go mutliplatinum or do worldwide tours, just raking in the big bucks.

Don't unleash the evil. Just by saying it's name it shall haunt you forever.

There is only one thing in life that will haunt a person until they die, and that is "It's a small world" from Disney parks.
