Default White faint circles on playstation discs?

Anyone know exactly what the white faint circles on the bottom of black playstation discs are? i have a few games where i can see circles that are about 1/4 an wide that go around the outer rim of the disc in a ring.

Against the black disc it almost looks like a white milky residue.

am i making sense? anyone know?

Just an uneducated guess (because I've seen it happen as well), but it sounds like the disc was run through an consumer disc resurfacer (like a Disc Doctor) rather than a professional one.

uggh, this is not what i wanted to hear.

just some more info about it...they are very , very faint that are not noticeable except under a light and they look almost like they are inside the disc.

Only other thing I could think of was that they might have used alcohol or electronics cleaner. Although the Disc resurfacing that was mentioned might be the major culprit. Either way who ever had them did you no favor.

You should check if they affect the game.

Like FMVs skipping, excessively long load times, etc.

Everything plays just fine. I played about 20 mins. into the game with no problems loading or anything.

When i purchased the game i was told it had never been used. Now when i look at the bottom of the disc it looks pretty scratch free with the exception of those faint circles.

I did some searching on the web and even though theres not much information, the discussions i found seemed to point to the laser of the console making these.

Any validity to that? You think a unit could have made those from a faulting laser or whatnot?

it might represent written/blank blocs on the disc. If the game isnt that large then the outer areas of the disc are left blank and there's a small but noticable ring.

I know exactly what you are talking about. These are not scratches at all, and nothing like what you get from a resurfacer. It couldn't be from the console laser, because like you said, they are about 1/4" in diameter and evenly spaced around the disc.

I have discs that are completely pristine that have this. It isn't quite accurate to call them 'white circles'. More like they are just lighter than the rest, or more transparent when you hold them up to light. They are perfect circles, too. They also don't appear to be on the surface, but rather part of a layer deeper in, maybe the label even.

I always just chalked it up to some abnormality in the pressing. Can't really call it a defect since the discs work just fine.

I don't think everyone is 'getting it'. Here is a quick drawing to show what is meant.

None of the personal or commercial resurfacers do anything like that to a disc.

Disc Dr's put out swirlies that go from the center of the disc out to the outer edge all the way around the disc. Professional machines can (this really depends on the kind of machine, opperator and how lubed up the scrubbing and buffing wheels were) leave circular marks that go around the disc that don't touch any of the edges normally.

What is the disc, as some of the covers on the PS discs are thin and let light through them when you look from the data side through them into the light, making you think that there is something there that isnt.

Only other thing I can think of is that its just something that happened in manufacturing and most likely won't affect your disc in the slightest.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

The game is Tactics Ogre. This was a thought of mine too but i cant see much light getting to the disc because of the double case.
I looked at couple of other games i have and a few have the same thing and they are pristine discs.

I think Corn. might have hit it on the nose regarding some manufacturers anomaly.

I was really beginning stress there because i paid a premium for this game to get it in pristine condition.

I have a few discs like that in my PSX collection....all mint, all bought new. I wondered what they were as well. Might be like vinyl records, which I also used to collect. Sometimes you'd get discoloration in the vinyl due to rubber glove residue from handling during the manufacturing process. You'd open an album, and it looked like it had been previously owned.

Could it be the label side allowing more light to pass through in some areas?
Condoleezza Rice is nice, but I prefer A Roni!

I've noticed this before on a few freshly-unsealed PlayStation games. I wouldn't say that it's a flaw. It's part of the manufacturing process, I'm sure.
