Default White faint circles on playstation discs?

Anyone know exactly what the white faint circles on the bottom of black playstation discs are? i have a few games where i can see circles that are about 1/4 an wide that go around the outer rim of the disc in a ring.

Against the black disc it almost looks like a white milky residue.

am i making sense? anyone know?

Just an uneducated guess (because I've seen it happen as well), but it sounds like the disc was run through an consumer disc resurfacer (like a Disc Doctor) rather than a professional one.

uggh, this is not what i wanted to hear.

just some more info about it...they are very , very faint that are not noticeable except under a light and they look almost like they are inside the disc.

Only other thing I could think of was that they might have used alcohol or electronics cleaner. Although the Disc resurfacing that was mentioned might be the major culprit. Either way who ever had them did you no favor.

You should check if they affect the game.

Like FMVs skipping, excessively long load times, etc.

Everything plays just fine. I played about 20 mins. into the game with no problems loading or anything.

When i purchased the game i was told it had never been used. Now when i look at the bottom of the disc it looks pretty scratch free with the exception of those faint circles.

I did some searching on the web and even though theres not much information, the discussions i found seemed to point to the laser of the console making these.

Any validity to that? You think a unit could have made those from a faulting laser or whatnot?

it might represent written/blank blocs on the disc. If the game isnt that large then the outer areas of the disc are left blank and there's a small but noticable ring.

I know exactly what you are talking about. These are not scratches at all, and nothing like what you get from a resurfacer. It couldn't be from the console laser, because like you said, they are about 1/4" in diameter and evenly spaced around the disc.

I have discs that are completely pristine that have this. It isn't quite accurate to call them 'white circles'. More like they are just lighter than the rest, or more transparent when you hold them up to light. They are perfect circles, too. They also don't appear to be on the surface, but rather part of a layer deeper in, maybe the label even.

I always just chalked it up to some abnormality in the pressing. Can't really call it a defect since the discs work just fine.

I don't think everyone is 'getting it'. Here is a quick drawing to show what is meant.
