I think it because of the design of their boxes; both have a 'lid' that facilitates storage.

Also, the cartridges for O2 games were handy enough that they practically begged to be kept for handy storage...so folks may have been inclined to do the same with their consoles as well.

Though I have absolutely nothing other than that bit of pop psychology to back that theory up.

It could also be because there was a chance they were not used as much. Kids wanted a video game system and got a c64 instead or a Ti 994a sure a C64 has a great selection of games IF you give it a chance. Or they wanted an Atari and got an Odyssey instead. I know the unit has its fans but it was not the system of choice for many kids back in the day.

Heh the local game store has a STACK of C64s in box and a Odyssey 2 as well. $30 each I believe.

I've only seen one C64 in a battered box in the wild, and one Odyssey2 (which I bought). I'd love to see more. Hell, I'd love to see pretty much any consoles boxed in thrifts/flea markets other than Sega Genesis units.

I have only seen a Dreamcast in the wild in the box. Local thrift store, bought it for 15, and since I already have mine in the box, I flipped it on eBay for 60.00. Nice profit, to bad it all went to support my drug habit!
Condoleezza Rice is nice, but I prefer A Roni!

Most of the C64s I've seen have been in the box, but I have only come across one or two Odysseys in the box.

I think it is a good point, that the systems were more like computers than video game systems. Other systems like the TI-99, as far as I have experienced, are also boxed the majority of the time.

With video game systems, kids tear the box open never to put the system away (at least not right away) because they are playing it, whereas, the computer game systems (C64, TI-99), the user will spend some time making codes or playing the computer type games and get bored fairly quickly and put it away for later, which doesn't come for many people. Then we find them in boxes!

I would definitely agree with the notion of who was buying the system as to the condition. The Nintendo and 2600 was a toy, more or less. Commodore was purchased by more grown-up users, who took better care of it. My mother threw the boxes out for everything I had. I think the 2600 we got in the early 80's was a used one anyway.
