    Default turbografx cords

i have an opportunity to purchase a Turbo Grafx 16, which is something I have been interested in for a while. the only problem is that it does not have any of the original cords. can i purchase something from Radio shack that will let me power it up and connect it to my TV, or does it have specialized inputs like some systems?

I believe that a "universal" NES / Genesis 1 AC adapter will power a standard TurboGrafix 16.

**EDIT** Stay away from NES adapters, or anything that output in AC ... looks like the Turbo needs a DC output.

Same with a universal auto RF switch, but I wouldn't waste my time with Radio Shack if I were you, they stopped carrying any type of NES era stuff years ago.

All is correct. A Genesis 1 power supply will run a TG-16 no problem. As for RF any of the auto RF boxes (NES, SNES, SMS, Genesis 1) will work, it's standard among those systems.

If that is in fact the case, that means that the Turbo needs a DC adapter.

I pulled my Turbo out of storage to check the specs on the adapter ... here's what it reads:

    INPUT: 120VAC 60Hz 16W
    OUTPUT: 9VDC 1Amp

Yup. Looks like DC it is. Genesis 1 should be fine, but stay away from an NES AC.

Yes, the Genesis 1 adapter will certainly work for a basic TG16 deck. However, if you later decide to add the CDROM, it will no longer be sufficient. What you can replace it with is Radio Shack part no. 273-1775 (12VDC 1.5A) with tip N. This adapter also works for the basic TG16 deck as well. Don't let the listed output fool you though...although the original adapter says 10.5V, it actually outputs around 15V. The TG16 contains a 7805 voltage regulator which keeps the power into the board consistent. From 9V to 12V isn't a huge step. Just don't try something patently absurd, such as 36V...that 7805 can only take so much input voltage; excess power is released as heat (which is why the thing's heatsinked) but too much input voltage will cause it to burn out or cause heat damage to nearby components from the large amount of heat released from the 7805.

As for the RF output, any normal RF switch, whether automatic or manual, will be sufficient. Or, you could have your console modified for composite or S-video. Of course, if you attach a TurboBooster, TurboBooster Plus, or CDROM, they add composite video, which is far superior to the RF output.
