Even though the controls kind of stink, I love the Acclaim Legends of Wrestling franchise, because you get to use pretty lifelike representations of classic grapplers, as they looked then. We've seen quite a few throwback racing sim titles on PC. There have been many history teams used in NFL games, Madden particularly. While I really don't get into current sports games, I would definitely give a look if they started incorporating bye-gone stadiums, teams, eras and even players. Has anyone done this yet? I really haven't followed it. Would love to play the 1955 World Series, heck even in black and white. Or play as the Great Bambino.

All Star Baseball 2003 (Acclaim for PS2/Xbox), which I own, lets you unlock legendary players and old school uniforms. I am sure that at least a few other games have done something similar or went beyond that.

They should let you play as Babe Ruth doing two hookers at once, God of War style.

And then you can take control of Ty Cobb as he jumps into the stands to beat the shit out of a disabled heckler.

Wasn't there a Legends of the Diamond game for the NES? Or was that the cancelled one?

I know there are unlockable players in the MVP Baseball games. I think some of the people in that game are Nolan Ryan, Willie Stargell and others I can't recall right now. I'm sure The Babe is one of them. You can unlock classic stadiums, too, such as Forbes Field.

Or you could swig three gallons of liquor as Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin.

Hell, I just want to snort coke with Darryl Strawberry and/or Dwight Gooden.

    Yes:

Wikipedia - Legends of the Diamond

"Legends of the Diamond is a Nintendo Entertainment System game that features legends of the baseball world including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, among others."

I remember reading about it in Nintendo Power. I've never played it, but the graphics looked good in the pictures.

EDIT: Here's a Java-based emulated version. Try it out for yourself:
