Default Does PS3 upscale PS2/1 games? How well?

I plan to eventually get a PS3 (with an Emotion Engine, preferably). After all, I eventually got an Atari 7800 last fall.

Anyway, I have a few PS2 games I was meaning to play through, but if the PS3 does a good job of upscaling them, I figure I can wait until I get one.

    Opinions?

    Thanks.

It upscales them, and does a good job. The difference is pretty dang huge (upscaling + smoothing), though it's more noticeable on PS2 games (since there are more pixels to work with in the source image).

In my experience it does a pretty good job. The only thing I've noticed is that on the one PSX game (FF Tactics) I've tried so far the text looks kind of icky. I haven't had a single problem with any of the PS2 games.

I was playing Wild Arms the other day and decided to up-scape it out of curiosity, needless to say I was floored on how great it looked. The same goes for PS2 games, the upscaling does look great and you can really tell a difference on almost any game you throw in there.

My only question is with games like God of War that offer widescreen and pogressive scan settings, is there a way to get it to format to fit my screen when in upscaling mode without putting the game in fullscreen mode? I ask this because I've read that the PS3 should be able to do this, considering the game does have that option available, but it doesn't seem to do it for me.

Unless that is I'm misunderstanding something and it doesn't work that way, which is more than likely the case.

First, don't use progressive scan if you want to upscale--the progressive scan will override it. Second, you can easily play widescreen games upscaled. All you have to do is set the rendering mode to full screen, and the game to widescreen.

So, is there any disadvantage to the 60 GB version besides HDD size?

Supposedly none. I've run into no problems.

I finally found a 60 GB model at quite a low price. It seems to work fine, however...
Does anybody notice a lag while playing PS2 or PS1 games on the PS3? Is it just my imagination or is it real? If it is real, how can I get rid of it? I have it hooked up via HDMI to my 1080p TV. I don't have any PS3 games yet to test it.

It's not the PS3, it's your TV (most likely). Some TVs have input lag with older games.

No, actually. I am acutely aware of HDTV lag and what causes it. It's the main reason I chose the TV I did. Now, this is a 1080p TV, and I am outputting a 1080p signal via HDMI (the PS3 upscales the games to this resolution). There should really be no lag. I also have my computer hooked up via HDMI, and I notice no lag while using it. I am almost certain the PS3 is doing something to cause the lag. Even a plain old PS2 outputting a 480i signal does not lag as bad as this.
