Default Question and Appraisal on a Japanes Sega Saturn.

Alright well I love the castlevania series and have been dying to get the Dracula X series (Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night). I know that a PC Engine will cost me a good amount of money and I have that all planned out.

Now there are two versions of SOTN. The PSX version and the Sega Saturn version kown as Akumajo Gekka no Yasoukyoku. The Sega Saturn Version has an extra playable character which is Maria. I also know this Saturn version is Japan exclusive. I was wondering if the Sega Saturn is region locked or if I could just use a regular Us Sega? Plus if I do need a Japanese Sega Saturn how much will this cost me?

    Regards

You can use a standard US Saturn as long as you have either an Action Replay or ST Key, personally I'd opt for the Action Replay 4-in-1, this cart has the ram capabilities built in already, that way you can play the games that require it or run better with it such as some of the fighters.

    Two things:

    1) A lot of people find the Saturn version of the game to be crappy. It is a lazy port. Long loading, some questionable graphics, etc. Plus Maria and the two extra areas are nothing too interesting. But the Castlevania fanatic that I am, I'm still happy enough with it.

    2) You don't need a Japanese Saturn. What you would probably want to do is get a hold of this thing called Action Replay 4M Plus. It essentially blows open your Saturn. It's a memory back up cart (though doesn't support direct save), an Action Replay, disables region lock, and supplies the extra RAM needed for those SNK and Capcom fighting games.

Alright and one more question, since the Saturn version is a bit pricey is there a way to put a ROM on a disk and play it like that? I remember my friend down the street had a Saturn and HUNDREDS of Pirated Games that his Dad actually made but I never knew how he did it. I'm talking like 3 large CD cases full of games. I'm sure this is possible and I could use any disk but I'm not a big Sega person.

    Thanks again-Kevman

It's called a Saturn mod chip. And you're not allowed to talk about pirating stuff on here. :P
