    Default PS2 Problem

It seems that my PS2 is acting strangely. Allow me to explain:

I recently bought a used copy of Kingdom Hearts (1). I took it home, popped it into my PS2 (SCPH-39001) and it loaded the game perfectly. I went to continue my old profile that I had stored on my memory card for years. I loaded it, nothing was corrupted, and everything was still there, then I tried to attack using the 'X' button and it worke--huh, why aren't I attacking???

Basically the 'X' button wasn't working.

So I figured it might be the controller, so I put in Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy X to see if those would work. They worked perfectly, and without a single problem.

I could navigate through the menus of Kingdom Hearts just fine, but when it came down to selecting things or attacking, nothing. So I had the disc professionally repaired, and it was still jacked up.

I returned it and bought a brand new copy of the game. The same thing happened. THE EXACT SAME THING. Its the Greatest Hits version of the game, in both cases.

Has this ever happened to anybody else or is it just me?

And hello to everybody on this forum!

Is it a first party controller (SONY)? It does it only with that game?

Yes, it is a Sony DualShock 2 PlayStation 2 controller. And yep, only happens with the one game. Any suggestions?

Maybe you switched the controls for cross and circle. I like to change them to japanese style since thats how they were on snes and psx. It confused me when they switched it.

That's a good guess. It really does NOT act like a hardware issue.

Unfortnately, you cannot switch controls on the game in question, and I have made sure that all other buttons were on the same configuration. Also, I almost never deviate from the default control scheme except in the case of the Halo games. (I <3 boxer settings) If you could change the default settings on Kingdom Hearts 1 then this would most likely not be an issue.

It may very well be an issue with the software, which is why I contacted Square-Enix with the problem. They have yet to respond, which is why I have posed the problem to these forums. You all are an intelligent sort from what I've seen here, and I appreciate the time you've taken from your busy days to answer the question I've posed here.

Did you try starting a new game without the memory card in the slot? This would eliminate your save as a suspect...

Does rumble still work on your PS2? (test with a different game)

A blown fuse will kill rumble. It also has the side effect of making DDR mats, multi-taps and wheels not work. That sort of strangeness could be related to this issue.

    See if your rumble works.
