    Default Starfox Competition Cart

Was looking through an old "Super Power Supplies Catalog" and saw this interesting item for sale:

Only $45 + $5 shipping. Plus, if you saved enough $1 coupons (two were included with the magazine and they stacked) you could get it for free.

Man, if we knew then what we knew now. I wish the catalog didn't say "This Catalog Expires March 31, 1994" or I would try to order one.

Maybe this belongs in Classic Gaming, but it still is an interesting look back at how much the value has gone up and how easily you could have had one. I'm sure a lot of you have seen this before, and have the issue in question, but I haven't, and thought it was neat.

Unless I'm mistaken you only get ~5 minutes of play on the NWC as well, which can run $15k. So really, this is a steal!

That was probably pricey for back then even if it's a steal compared to what it sells for online nowadays. Nintendo Power sold them for $25 (can't remember if that included shipping)

Yeah, it's a steal alright...for the person that walks away with $15,000. For the other person, they just got robbed. I've always known these carts(all the competition ones) were time based, but 5 minutes? Damn. Does anyone know if they can be set to play longer?

You coudln't even use game genie or pro codes on the nwc because the timer was hardwired into the board, not too sure if you could on the starfox or dk country versions, you can however "hack" the roms to change the timer but not on a legit cart without rewiring it.

In my mind strictly for the best collection(s) and the deepest pockets. Thus not for me.

Definetly would have been a good buy back then

So what if these carts only have five minutes of gameplay? Sure, I wouldn't pay $15,000 for any competition cart, but if I got lucky someday, it'd still be my holy grail.

The Gold NWC is considered to be one of the holy grails of game collecting, if not the top, and the grey NWC is up there as well. The Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country competition carts are considered the holy grails of SNES collecting. And for some of the hardcore collectors out there, the price is worth it, no matter what others may think of shelling out that much money for a game that can be completed in mere minutes. If they have the dream and the deep pockets, awesome. Just post some pics I can enjoy looking at while dreaming of finding a copy hidden in a box of random stuff at someone's garage sale.

its more of what those games represent, espeically those of us who were in those competitions (I was a semi finalist in the nwc myself) the nwc would mean more to me then say some 12 year old nintendo collector. but yeah the gameplay isn't anything revolutionary or differnt like say an unreleased prototype. still the unique experience and the fun of trying to beat your high score (or the score you really got in the competion) makes the price of admission worth it to some.

In Canada they were selling those carts like hotcakes at a place called Ontario Place (a theme slash water park) in there then official Nintendo shop

The Nintendo shop had various Nintendo booths that would display the new SNES titles

I actually own this Star Fox cartridge
