Default Just got a PS3, need some help

    Hey guys

I need some help, I just got a PS3 and can't figure out how to get it to work... maybe I'm stupid or something. Turns of fine, controller syncs fine, asked me to connect to hdmi blah blah all that good stuff. The menu comes up fine to and I have no problems going between options and making a new user and stuff like that.

But I can't get it to play anything, I figured if I put in a DVD it would either start up or an icon would come under the Video part of the menu with the dvd name or something to start it at least. I got nothing Just the find media server thing and the data folder. So I put in a PS2 game (no ps3 games as of yet) and the same thing, nothing comes up (under the game tab this time of course). Am I doing anything wrong, is there anything I'm not doing? It grabs and ejects the disc just fine but it doesn't seem to make a noise after I put it in (though I've read that the ps3 is really quiet.)

So can someone help me out :>

DVD's should come up under the VIDEO section of the XMB.

PS2 games (if you have a PS2 compatible PS3) should be under the games section.

It SOUNDS like your PS3 isn't reading disks.

Try a music CD and see what it does.

If it won't read any of the above, I'd say return it for a replacement wherever you picked it up sooner rather than later.

    I second this.

I'm also moving this to the Tech forum.

Return it from whence it came with receipt in hand ... it's not like they're in short supply.

This is the first instance I've ever heard of one not reading disks!

Selling somebody a non-functional 60 Gig PS3 is serious bad karma.

I hope he makes good on getting you a working PS3.

I doubt he has another one :P

But I rather get it working then get the money back, what would I have to do for the warranty to get it fixed? Do I need the original receipt or just something that's on the console?

sony only honors warranties with original proof of purchase (and within a year) so unless this guy has a receipt within the past year for that serial (probably not likely otherwise he would have called to have it fixed for free) you'll have to pay to get it repaired.

RyanMurf (DP's in-store repair guy) says that PS3s have pretty "basic" internals ... perhaps the blu-ray drive is easily swappable with a 40 Gig unit.

If I have to pay then I'd rather just get my money back ;p i'd only get it repaired if it was cheap.

    Default I can fix it!!!

I can repair it for you. Being a forum member I can see you maybe being able to strike a deal(not a big deal maybe a little DP forum member discount) with Joe (the owner). I dont know if these bluray drives are on our order sheet. I think they might and if they are i think there only 50-70 bucks and 35 to repair it. i would definitely get it repaired if its a 60GB only because there next to impossible to find. And yes all the drives are the same in all models as of now.

It wouldn't hurt to give customer service at Sony a call and ask. A few years ago I bought a well used PS2 at a yard sale, needless to say it didn't work when we got it home. So my wife called Sony and had a conversation with the nice lady. (I do have to say my wife could sell water to a drowning man.) She took pity on us and told us to pay the postage to get it to them and she would take care of the rest. Sixteen days later we had our PS2 back working like new. They even paid the postage to get it back to us. You never know, but it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck!

I kind of thought of this place as a DIY based info forum, but if ads are OK as posts, according to a DP rep, what the hey!

I can fix it too!! We have drives in stock at all times, and repair replace between 3- 5 per week.

FYI PS3 drives are not straight across swappable, just like XB360 DVDrom drives. Drive replcement is possible, but straight swapping is a no go.

Correct they are not. You need to save the drive board from your old one and swap it with the new drive.

    Default All fixed

    Your PS3 is all fixed

It did not need a new drive. Just some cleaning and laser realigning. I will catch you on aim or you can call me at the store today to talk about payments and shipping.
