Worth buying replacement joystick? (N64)

I have a N64 controller where the joystick is worn out so bad that it hangs all the way over to any of the sides. I saw on ebay that they sold replacement joysticks. I was just wondering if it is worth it, and if anyone has done it before? Is it complicated? Thanks!

Wow, this is something I did 10 years ago, too. My cousin was notorious for manhandling the Analog sticks, and he had several that "didn't" work anymore. I opened them up like that, and cleaned everything out and a small amount of joystick grease (which oddly I had from a CH Flight stick repair kit), and they were good as new. Nintendo 64 (Nintendo made) components were maybe the most well designed and durable console parts ever.

As for ordering that replacement part, I would want to be certain that is an official Nintendo part. One of the reasons I hated 3rd Party N64 controllers was that their analog sticks were terrible. Interact I remember explicitly was a hunk of junk.

If you do get a new N64 control stick you really should open it up and add ceramic grease or another plastic-friendly lubricant; it extends the life of the stick considerably. I'm been using the same controller for about four years and it's still as good as the brand new N64 controllers I own.

The ones I picked up do not have the plug, and have two red/black wires (each) unlike originals with 6 wires into a connector.

Does anyone know of a guide to replace the thumbstick with these 3rd party replacement parts?

Does it look like this? if it does, then you could detach the old cable (by desoldering) and attach it to the new one.
You could also transplant the parts from the new housing to the old one, I don't know if the parts look the same on the inside though.

The replacement N64 joysticks read a bit weird, most notably with Goldeneye 007 due to increased sensitivity. I have had some good experience with the GC looking joysticks off of videogamemuseum on ebay, but they seem to be down for the moment.

Replacing them is easily done, with no soldering required, just plug and play, and with a bit of familiarization you'll be good to go!

Has anyone ever done a comparison between the different replacement analog sticks? Someone said a while ago that there are several OEM styled (not like GameCube) replacements out there. I ordered one of the OEM style ones and there is a lot of internal friction. Are there any better ones out there?
