Default SEGA PICO not working or is it just me?

Today I went to a few resale shops and was most surprised to find a SEGA PICO in box with 1 game for $20. I bought it since it completes my SEGA collection (one version of each SEGA console). I got one game for it which is A Year at Pooh Corner.

The console works, but I can't seem to play any games. I'm not sure if it is the pen messing up or what. I can move the cursor around the screen and all, but whenever I try to do anything it doesn't work. I may be playing the game incorrectly, so if anyone has a manual that would be nice. I've been trying to click on characters and on the book to see if anything works and nothing seems to happen.

You are actually pushing down with the pen, right? As in the white part on the tip going up inside the pen a little.

Yes, I hear it click and nothing happens. I'm pressing it on the pad too. I have the console manual, so I am holding it upright.

Hmm, if it's turning pages when you turn pages then your storyware sensors are okay. Try cleaning the cartridge slot (like three rows of connectors in there) and the cartridge, I've had some Pico software do odd things when dirty. If that doesn't fix it inspect the pen, is it chewed on anywhere and is the cable stretched or bent sharply anywhere? Some kids tended to drag the system around by the pen but if it's allowing the cursor to move around properly it should be alright. Hmm.. I'll have to think about this one.

Cleaning the cartridge and connectors didn't seem to do much good. I used qtips and alcohol to try to clean up as much as I could but to no avail. I think the problem may be that the console isn't recognizing the pen's pushed down. I hope at least that is the problem since it is not too hard to replace the pen. First though I need to figure out how to remove the pen since a reset may fix it.
