Default Sega Genesis 16-Bit.. Won't Power On / Show Picture

    Hi Everyone,
Can someone tell me whats wrong / how to fix :

    The Story:

My sega genesis 16-bit would never power on / show picture.
I really didn't care until now, I would like you use this one as a back-up.
I plug the AC Adapter in the system into the wall and system. Hook the RF Adpater up to TV and System...
    NO POWER & PICTURE.
So I bend the wire (AC Adapter) Now it powers on.. But... I still have NO Picture...
If I do not bend the wire (AC Adapter) there is no power.
I even opened the system and cleaned it.

So Please tell me whats wrong...

P.S. The Cables I am using says (If this helps):
    Sega Auto RF Switch
    Model # 1603A
The AC Adapter I am using
    Sega
    Model # 1602-1
    Use With Sega Genesis

Also if need more info let me know.

    Thanks,
    HITMAN TYLER

    Ok. Try these things:

    a) Try the RF switch on another console. The NES, Genesis and Master System use compatible RF units, so any of those consoles will do fine as tests. Does it work?

    b) Instead of putting the cart all the way in, put it midway and pull the cart to the front of the console, then turn the system on. Does it work? If it does then your cartridge slot pins are loose.

You need a new power supply. Yours has a break in the cord. You could try to fix the power supply, but it might be easier to get a new one.

I can't try the 1st one... Since I have no other system that will fit the RF switch.

Also the 2nd one, All of my games work... I tested them on my other Genesis NOT the 16-Bit version.

I didn't mean to imply that the carts didn't work. I wanted you to test if the Genesis cartridge slot is loose.

Do you have the Genesis AV cable to use, instead of the RF?

Do you have the Genesis model with the headphone jack on it? If so then you could at least check if sound is comming out of it and let you know the games are working.

If you're only getting power on by bending down the power jack, I'd say the solder joints that connect the power jack to the PCB are cracked. Simply reflow the joints to seal the cracks and it's done. My Genesis 2 had the exact same problem, and since I reflowed the solder joints it's worked fine ever since.

Replacing the power jack probally isn't neccesary. Anytime that a jack is soldered to a circuit board there's a good change that the solder is going to loose some connection from repeated plugging and un-plugging. That's why so many things evenually get to the point that you have to wiggle the cable to get them to work propperly.

What he was suggesting you do is to reflow (re-heat) the solder so all will be like new again. If the problem is the jack and not the adapters wire then this should fix that problem right up. You mentioned that you had to bend the wire. Is it in a certain spot or at the Genesis? If it's at the Genesis then it's probally the jack. If it's somewhere in the middle of wire then you probally need a new AC adapter.

If it's a Genesis-1, it's probably not the power jack
If it's a Genesis 2/3, it probably IS the power jack

Solution: go to pawn shop/thrift store and get a new Genesis for $1

His is a model 1, and even though the power jack isn't usually a problem with those models, it can happen. Generally with any sort of electronics, if you have to push down on a connector (whether it be a power jack or a headphone jack) to get something to work, it almost always means the solder joints are cracked and need to be reflowed.
