Default Super Mario 3 NTSC but in Japanese

Hi, I remeber when super mario 3 game out. Oh how everyone was so excited. Well there was a small video game store near are home were we rented all of our games. Well the day SMB 3 game out we were the first ones there to rent it. But of all things this just popped into my head as really wierd. The copy that we rented was in the normal NTSC format, 72 pin cart. But all the writing and everything was in japanese. Just wondering how rare this type of cart is or what there alot of them. Would like to get my hands on one of these. :-D

AFAIK, that was a pretty common thing back in the day. Quite a few rental places did that to get the game before it's US release.

Yup, very common practice since SMB3 was released in Japan way before the US. I knew a couple video stores who had Japanese copies for rent. In fact, renting it got me to go down to Chinatown and buy my own copy and I still don't have an English version.
