Are American Nintendo Point Cards Compatible with Japanese Wii's?

I am going to get a Japanese Wii soon, and I was wondering if American point cards can be used with it.
If they aren't, am I going to have to order Japanese point cards?

Hm, maybe Japan uses the same credit card format as the UK?

I don't think that's it, Japan pretty much has their own credit card format. I think that you can use a US credit card, actually. Has anyone actually tried it? I would right now, but my Wii is temporarily in a location in which it can't get a wireless signal, and won't for the next couple of months or so.
