Turbo Express Turns On But Blank Screen, Help!

I've got an externally very good condition TurboGrafx Turbo Express that turns on but has a blank screen, no display. What can I do about this? Is there anywhere I can send it to get repaired?

failed capacitors. the surface mount caps will leak or dry out in TE units as well as turbo duos and sega game gears. only way to fix it is to replace the capacitors

Crack it open.



There will be a silver capacitor right there. Replace it. That will solve your problem

The link will tell you other caps you might want to replace eventually. They also address the audio issue.

I never realized (until recently re-collecting the TG16 and acquiring the Turbo Express) how many cap problems plague this handheld...and the Game Gear for that matter. At least they all can be repaired.

Or Radio Shack should have them as well. If your planning on replacing the other caps too I'd go with digikey.com or mouser.com, even with shipping it will be much cheaper.

I'm mega afraid to mess with anything inside but I'll give it a shot, nothing a little online tutorial can't teach me! Thanks guys

The TE is actually one of the easier handhelds to work with. Just be nice to the ribbon cables and you should be fine. Please be aware that the ribbon between the mainboard and the card slot does NOT separate on either side. To remove the capacitor, just grab it with a pair of needle nose and gently wiggle it back and forth. Don't worry, it will pop off.

Last thing... be sure to get the polarity correct when you solder the new cap down.
