Default 10 year BD profits, will they justify a lack of PS3 profit?

How has/will Blueray effect Sony profits over the next 10 years? Will it be enough to cover what they could have made with the PS3 or were they really counting on both products making a ton of money? Could it be that Sony knew they were sacrificing the PS3 for a greater good? Could Sony be putting up a front with the PS3 in order to simply recover some of the R&D? I would like to know how much money the PS1 and PS2 made them and how that compares to what they hope to make with BD. Also, how do they expect BD profits to compare to the first ten years of DVD profits.
Regarding this subject, knowing as little as I do, I wonder if 10 year BD profits could trump what they could have made with another successful system.

    How would we know?

Sony apparantly thought it would be a positive long term investment, so I'm inclined as far as guesses go to say this will eventually be a profitable venture for them.

Sony needs more than a couple of great games for this holiday to be salvagable for them. I like my PS3, but unless there is a decent price drop, it is going to get thumped this holiday. While I think that the PS3 will stride on for years to come, I fear that it will soon start limping onward if it does not change the direction it has gone with the pS3

Blu-ray has accounted for, what, 8% of the home video market? It's not doing very well...at least, not yet.

I'll get back to you with some statistics ....

    ...

    ...

    ...

    in 10 years.

Anything sooner than that is just. PURE. SPECULATION.

Yes, I am still bitter from the ps2 taking out the dc in the us market, so i say too bad for sony. yes, fanboy talk right there, but what comes around goes around sony.

as for what will happen with blu ray, uh, they need to start downing dvds if they want to hit a good market. how often does something come out exclusively for bd and not dvd? as long as dvd's keep getting released in as much of a quantity if not more than bd, than it really doesn't matter if hd-dvd got taken out, because of how dominant the dvd is when it comes to movie medium.

i don't think sony realized that you can't just take out hd-dvd, but you have to actually take out dvd. have fun with that sony.

a movie coming out on dvd and blu-ray and is 10-15 cheaper on dvd for the same movie, well, people are realizing that price is better than resolution. would you rather spend 15 for transformers, or 30 for transformers? unless you are a mediaphile or something, most people will go to dvd, plus bd is retareded expensive (movies and player).

They need to do more research into ways to make the product cheaper. if they can compete and bring the price down to what dvd's are, then they will have more of a chance. I mean, players can still be 200-300, but anything after that better come with a free tv or something, or else most consumers will not bite

No, it isn't just speculation. It's history and theory.

Maybe one poster knows the answer to one question and another poster will know the answer to another. Pool that info, and we have our history. Based on that, form a theory.

    A successful console:
    1. How many consoles has the PS2 sold?
    2. At what point did the PS2 turn a profit?
    3. How many 3rd party games has the PS2 sold?
    4. What does Sony charge 3rd parties to release a game? (i.e. Nintendo charging "$20" on the 64.)

    A successful video media:
    1. How large a stake does Sony hold in BD?
    2. Which company holds the stake in DVD that is most comparable to Sony's BD stake? (Toshiba?)
    3. What does Sony end up making on a BD that is sold?
    4. etc, etc, etc. There are plenty of answers we could try to find that would help determine exactly what Sony risked with the PS3.

Either have fun with the discussion or pick it apart. Whatever makes you happy.

Sony also better hope that digital downloads (in one form or another) don't take off...

At least we are seeing a lot of Blu-ray players that are a lot cheaper than the PS3. I am seeing a lot of them at Walmart, Sony brand, for around $250. And I have seen off brands as well as known ones for less than $200. (A DVD player can be had for $50.) I guess for those who are not gamers, that is a good thing. But still as the point is being already made, the DVDs are more tempting at the cheaper price, unless you are really into the higher resolution that comes with the Blu-ray technology.

I just remembered, I really loved the beta format.

Hhmmm.... here is a link from ZDnet concerning the Blu-ray's end, maybe?
