Default PSP 3000 hacked (for real this time...)

The new Lite Blue Tool from Datel will put your shiny new PSP 3000 into service mode for some firmware flashing fun.

I knew it would only be a matter of time. Sony would be better off investing time in new games than encryption schemes.

That is awesome to hear. I'm still glad I picked up a 2000 off of ebay. If it ever craps out on me, it's good to know that I'll still be able to hack a new one.

Nice tool to have if one repairs PSP consoles.

Like if someone does a wrong upgrade...you can simply pop in the battery and try to recover the PSP.

That is why I never got rid of my PSP Tool Battery...in case something happens in the future.

Wow. Usually you hear about these hacks from random hackers, but Datel themselves? That's rather surprising (well, maybe not) and cool.

It would appear I was slightly wrong about Datel's new battery. Yes, it will put the 3000 into service mode, but you won't be able to do anything useful from there.

However, we now have a 'Hello World' proof of concept running on the 3000 using the GripShift game.

    PSP News article.

So yeah the 3000 really has been hacked now, and I'm sure this new exploit will allow all sorts of fun with the new system, just like the previous models.

I've heard about it, and it seems like they haven't cracked the IPL for use in the board. So while it's in service mode, it's still useless.

Also worth mentioning, some of the newer PSP-2000 models (with motherboard TA-088 v3) have the same IPL protection. When there's a hack for one, it'll likely work on both.

However, a buffer overflow exploit has apparently been discovered in Grip Shift. (Anybody remember the Lumines save hack?) That might end up being a custom firmware attack vector.

It really does look like homebrew is very close to being available on the 3000. And you don't need a copy of Grip Shift either.....
