Default BAD Nintendo Legend Of Zelda.Locks up..

    BAD Nintendo Legend Of Zelda.

    Gold Cart..
I sold a NES System On Ebay a few days ago..I tested the system over and over with the three games offered...I even took a video of the three games working while I played them..
    SMB/Duck Hunt
    Tetris
    Zelda

SMB and Zelda still work fine..

The package was to be shipped tomorrow so I was retesting the system today while packing it up making sure it works perfectly..(refurb 72 aas I've sold 1000s of NES systems)

Upon trying to start to play Zelda the Game locks up and stays in a constant HUM.....Cleaned the cart connectors again and even tried it in another NES system..It still does the same thing..
If you leave the game on to demo it locks up midway when the words screen comes up..It'll lock up in the same spot everytime..

Sadly the game worked fine ..It just went Bad,..What Happened?

    Talk about Bad Luck..
This $$ was to be used for a Christmass GIFT but once this happened I REFUNDED the buyer right away..and sent him two videoes of the problem with explanation..
I don't want to send something out that doesn't work..

I did try to aquire another Zelda from a local retro game shop but it's out of stock..

    I hope the Buyer Understands...
..I didn't try to push sending the stuff like that as he could still say, file with paypal that he didn't get what was ordered thus I lose both ways..

I feel I did the right thing by refunding him I just hope he doesn't NEG me..

    What would have you done.?

Did you try putting a new battery in?

    Would that fix it...?

I figured it's a Rom Chip Issue..It locks up at the Zelda name on screen part when press start is pressed on the controller..It won't go into game anymore..

I did go into a game like a week ago.

With the battery I have to get one..

Just that the battery may cost more then the cart

I would have offered the buyer $5 back or something and tried to sell them the stuff that was working fine (system and other games).

Find some copper polish and clean the connectors with a Q-tip.

Default thank you..I had thought about it..

I did however note to him that the auction is still available to him less the Zelda..unless he wanted a bad cart..
All he'd have to do is re-send payment and or offer me less due to the problem..
the The auction ended at $31.00

I just felt that giving him an instant refund is more honest then trying to pull him into the deal..
Atleast if he wants to get another he's got the money back..He bid on the auction on the last day it was listed..

I haven't got a responce from him after I tolfd him when it would be shipped(as I usualy get a thank you). The buyer looks to be an online video game store with a ton of feedback..

He might be too busy ..

    Added..
I've been dealing with the worst of the worst buyers on ebay..I can't get a break let alone make sales..
Maybe it's a sign of the times..
It sems like every other buyer tries to find any nitche to get something for nothing..

I guess you could say that I really didn't want to deal with the BS and gave a full refund..
    ..........

Have you tried hitting it with a rolled up newspaper?

Humm... if cleaning the cart does not fix it after you opened it and you are getting corruption you may have a candidate for a board change.

Ok here is the situation... carts sometimes go bad.. the boards or traces sometimes just fall apart due to age, damage or other factors.

At the store we have saved quite a few games by doing major surgery to save the game. In fact last night I just saved the game Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom for the NES by desoldering off the ROM chips and replacing them onto a cart that has the same board. Its a pretty radical idea but by sacraficing a terrible sports game or some other game you can save something more desireable. Of course it all comes down to personal preference, sometimes its just cheaper to fling the cart, but if it is a keeper its soooo worth it.

We fix carts and systems at the store here and are often faced with bizarre situations that sometimes just need a creative solution.

Hope this helps out a bit....

I had a LoZ cartridge that had this EXACT same problem, but it never worked right. If you went to start the game it would lockup, black screen and a hum like you said. If I let the attract screens run, it would lock up just as the "ALL OF TREASURES" graphic was about to scroll up. I ended up just tossing it. Sucked because I purchased that one as a gift too, from a BS artist at the local flea market.

    That thread is here.

It's worth a try since other posters have mentioned cartridges that misbehaved until a new battery was installed. See this thread for an example:

Busted SNES cartridge? What to do?

I figured it's a Rom Chip Issue..It locks up at the Zelda name on screen part when press start is pressed on the controller..It won't go into game anymore..
Could be a cracked solder joint. Check all the legs of the chips on the board and look for any welds that are cloudy, lack shine or are not connecting the trace to the pin properly. It's also possible that a trace itself is cracked.

Personally I would consider the battery to be the culprit before a bad rom since the game wouldn't boot and progress as far as it does (before freezing) if there was a problem with the chip or circuit board traces.

If you would like it fixed I dont mind fixing it for you. Legend of Zelda is not a hard cart to get at least here in Corpus Christi TX, so I would normally keep the case and use it for a game that has a bad case.

If however it is sentimental to you I dont mind fixing it for you and sending it back to you. I will even take pictures of the process, you might get a kick out of seeing the process.

I orginally did this procedure with a Mortal Kombat 4 for the N64 by sacraficing an NFL Quarterback Club, good use of that terrible football game in my opinion.

While I cannot guarantee every game can be fixed, we have fixed all of the games we have attempted it on so far, so that is encouraging.

PM me if you are interested and I will be happy to communicate with you on it.

Yes yes,..that I would enjoy very much...It would be a learning experience for me..I'd love to sit and watch as someone fixes games and arcade boards..
Do I need to get a sac cart?

I will be in touch.....I just have to give some time for the NES refunded transaction to end-pass as I haven't heard anything from the buyer...
Just incase he comes out of the woods and wants it..

Heck, I'd be interested in seeing the process myself, if that's at all possible. This is something I've considered getting into, and given it's in my nature to salvage working items from piles of mangled and defective parts (even if they don't end up being the originally intended product), I think it would be right up my alley.
