Nintendo handheld was always region free. Since classic gameboy to pokemon mini to DSlite. DSi will have downloadable content which is region locked.

Could you simply set your DSi to another region and download import content? How does the DSi know whether it's actually in the correct region? Do you need to import a new DSi from japan?

Are you sure the DSi isn't actually fully region-locked? In any case, the original DS and the DS Lite are indeed region-free.

From what i have heard the DSi doesn't allow you to change the region someone also told me you cant change the language setting on it but im not sure if that's true or not. So yes if you want to download content from Japan your going to need to import one from there.

I got my DSi a few days ago, you can't change your region and everything is in Japanese. The screens are huge and even better than the DS Lite, and it has a ton of cool features to mess around with photos and sounds you take or make.

I am crossing my fingers for a firmware update that allows for language selection once the DSi hits the USA and Europe. As it stands I navigate by trial and error, not knowing wtf I'm doing.

And the DSi plays all DS games, the DSi games are said to be locked, which makes sense since you access the Japan-specific DSiware store and have no way of getting any other DSiware games onto the system.
