    Default GENS CD Help

I have a US Genny/CD/32X system. I recently got a European game and discovered it would'nt play on my system. So since I had heard that GENS was pretty good at running Sega CD games I thought I would try that.

But not wanting to try anything complicated, I tried one of my working American CD games first. I followed the instructions in the GENS file to set up the emulator and downloaded the ASPI drivers, which I did not have installed (I run Win XP). I also downloaded Version 1 and 2 of the Sega CD BIOS files.

However, no dice. GENS acts like there is no game CD in the drive. I've tried both BIOS versions and put the CD in both of my CD drives, and the same result.

Can anyone who has successfully played Sega CD games with GENS help?

I never had major problems running Gens on my computer (except for maybe my CD drive overheating). There may be compatibility issues with certain CD drives, though.

If all else fails, you could just rip it to your hard drive and play it that way.

And how would one do that?

Does it made which ASPI driver set we download? I downloaded the Adaptec set.

My drives are a Toshiba DVD and a Light On CD-RW.

If you want to play your cd games off the HD. You have to rip them to iso/mp3 format. (I think you run the .iso or .cue file.. try either). Here's a tutorial that shows you how to rip them.

Yeah the url is regarding the xbox gens port. But the instructions are the same.

Just had a thought -- I use Game Drive Manager as well. Could that be messing up the ability of Gens to detect the CD, even though Gens says that it finds a CD drive?

It allows you to make a 'virtual' image of the CD on your HD so you're not always having to swap in the game disc every time. It makes a 'virtual' CD drive and you just select which game you want to 'load'.

I can't find the home page right now, but either the downloaded or boxed version is $20 -- best money I ever spent.

Your virtual CD Drive software MAY be the culprit, but I run Alcohol 120% whichis a program that does the same thing (you can mount ISO files to a virtual cd/dvd drive etc) and I don't have problems with gens. Make sure you can see your cd-rom drive in question in the drop down menu in gens and that it is selected...that is the one you are using. Make sure you also have the CD bios files correctly pathed in the directory options. When you run a particular Sega CD you should see the name of the game in the title of Gens emulator box. If you have tried all of this and still no dice, I'll give you an ASPI fixer and a zip of all the CD BIOS files. Email me at zektor@digitpress.com if you need these.

Well, that's the thing -- the drive that I can see in Gens does'nt seem to be EITHER of my physical drives -- it seems to be the same as my virtual CD drive, but with a weird name of 'DVD_fcs 7040'. But nothing was there at all before the ASPI files, so I don't know.

And yes, I have the BIOS files pointed in the right directory. Thanks for the help.

Or you could just get Daemon Tools which does the same thing and is free.
