    Default Can a SegaCD's internal memory be fixed?

    I have a SegaCD model 2 and its internal memory won't hold the saves after I turn the power off. Everytime I start a game where a game save is required I have to reformat the internal memory. Usually its not a problem cause I have 2 SegaCD Ram carts. I am playing The Space Adventure right now and when I get the option to save a game it saves it to the internal memory only and not to the Ram cart. Is there a way to get to the options screen when playing a game?

    That would be a battery issue. Yours is dead- so is the one in mine, conversely. Model 2 uses the following:

    Sanyo ML2016 Lithium Button Cell.

    Probable that it could be swapped out for a similar cell with 3 volt rating, I'm going to get around to experimenting myself.

    I was talking to someone else and was told that the SegaCD uses Flash Rom for its memory and that no internal battery is used. Can anyone confirm this?

    Why don't you open your SegaCD and find out?

    1. The manual states you have to leave your SegaCD plugged in/powered on at least once a month to keep a charge in the battery for saving.

    2. There is a coin cell located on the motherboard of the SegaCD unit, there'd be no other use for it.

    3. Once flash memory goes, you'd have a hard time replacing it and repairing it would be impossible. You wouldn't be able to save to it at all even if the unit was powered.

    Mine is the same way. Haven't tried to replace it yet. Looks the same as replacing a cart battery. Tricky, but with higher stakes. Just take care not to tear out one of the battery contacts, or it's soldering iron time. You can "tape' the new batt in place.

    people.. the battery your talking about can be purchased from your local radioshack store or if you live in europe elfa.. and the soldered pins is a part of the battery.. anyway replacements can easly be found at your local electronic parts store. if you cant manage to desolder it yourself take the console with you and ask if they can do it for you.. (recommended) it wont cost that much..
    Broken? fix it.

    Been covered.

    Thanks though. there was confusion, as the SEGA CD FAQ said otherwise about the battery.

    A quick word on battery codes, now that I'm thinking on the subject.

    Generally, so long as the number and voltage are the same (such as a 1.4V "2016"), the letters before or after it don't matter. They usually just refer to either a specific manufacturer or a minor variation.

    For instance...

    CR = usually Panasonic
    DL = Duracell
    ML = apparently Sanyo (I hadn't seen that one until this thread)
    EL = Energizer

    ...and so on.

    Also, there are numerous cross-codes for the same or similar batteries. One of the most common types is the A76 lithium button-cell (used in everything from Tamagotchi pets to laser pointers), which also goes by the names "357" or LR1154. Next time you buy one of these cells, look closely at the package and note all the different cross-codes listed (I know Energizer always has them on its blister packs).

    I've been meaning to steal our conversion guide from work for a while and post this stuff to clear up any confusion, but I haven't gotten around to it. Soon, I hope.

    Duncan

    PS: Actually, I'm just gonna do a quick web search and see if I can't find some good battery interchange guides. I'll post 'em in the main Repair Links thread at the top of this forum when I find anything useful.
