    Default Double Dragon

Well, one of my all time favorite games for the NES was Double dragon. I am only aware of there being a one and two, and I love them both. I can't get past about the 5th level on Double Dragon two, and get stuck pretty fast on Double Dragon one, but whenever ihave frineds over i make them sit through the "Painfull" 2o minutes of gameplay, which they end up enjoying. It is a truely great game, and I was curious if any of you had ever played it?
Is it a sin to be weak hearted? Not everyone's strong. Not everyone can stand being despised.

You can call me whatever you like. It's not gonna change anything.

There's 3 Double Dragon games on the NES(4 if you count Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team). There's more on other systems too.

I also like playing the early Double Dragon games, the later ones just aren't as good.

It is pretty safe to say that at least 80-90% of the people posting here at DP have played some version of Double Dragon in their lifetime.

I'll add a few comments, though.

If you like Double Dragon 1 on the NES, then you should consider picking up either Double Dragon Advance on Gameboy Advance or Double Dragon 1 on the black and white Gameboy. I think you'd enjoy them both.

You should avoid any and all versions of Double Dragon 3 and Double Dragon 5, since both of those games suck. People here might recommend the NES version of Double Dragon 3 but it isn't nearly as good as Double Dragon 1 or 2 on NES.

I do agree it is a great game, one of the best. Double Dragon gets bashed around here a little bit because it is too short and hasn't aged well but what is there is fun.

I make my friends sit through painful Double Dragon experiences as well! We all grew up playing the classics, but they have 'evolved' to PS3 and Xbox 360, so sitting through Double Dragon is now painful to them. I still play the classics and the Double Dragon series, particularly on the NES is a classic.

I always liked Double Dragon 2 the most of the originial trilogy. Seems the most refined of the 3.

... Are you kidding? DD3 is awesome. I can't believe someone is slamming this game.

I think I own it, but it isn't as good as the first 2.

And here's The Angry Video Game Nerd's review of Double Dragon 3.

Yes, but that's the AVGN, he shouldn't be taken seriously because he overreacts to the bad parts of the game.

I played the game and came very close to beating it on a real console when I was younger. Everyone who complains about the difficulty... well... they must suck because I found it OK. The biggest issue I always had was the lifebar, how it doesn't seem to replenish itself between levels. I think.

Yes!! I absolutely love Double Dragon! Even though there are many (technically) superior beat-em-ups out there, none have quite captured the look and feel of Double Dragon. I own many different versions of this game, from the NES all the way up to the 1-on-1 NeoGeo version and love them all (some more than others, of course ;p)

Those of you who have a Dreamcast, or don't mind playing games on your PC, should really check out some of the homebrew DD games. Double Dragon Extreme uses sprites from the first 2 arcade games, as well as music from the arcade, NES and some cool remixed stuff. The game features some pretty nifty moves from the arcade and GBA games, too. Or you can check out Return of Double Dragon, which uses sprites from the GBA game in a Super Double Dragon (SNES) setting, and has some pretty off-the-wall regular and super moves, as well as the ability to juggle people. Not to mention the ability to choose an arranged, SNES/SFC, or PCE soundtrack. I highly recommend looking these two games up if you want to see something a little different!

I'm a huge Double Dragn fan as well. The first two games are great. I have the third game for the Genesis(and use to have it for the Nes) and it really is not as good as the first two. Also, you can play the original arcade version of Double Dragon over Xbox Live as a downloadable title for the 360.

One more thing, avoid the Neo Geo cd/PS1 import Double Dragon game at all cost. It was based on the horrible live action Double Dragon movie and it super sucks.

Is it beatable? I played it as a kid, but remember it being pretty tough... I have 1 and 2 for NES and I think 5 or something for genesis, haven't touched them though...

NES Double Dragon 2, I assume?

    I'd rank them like this.

    1. Arcade Double Dragon
    2. Genesis Double Dragon
    3. Gameboy Advance Double Dragon
    4. Gameboy (B & W) Double Dragon
    5. NES Double Dragon 2
    6. Arcade Double Dragon 2
    7. NES Double Dragon

Yup, NES. I don't remember much of playing the DD games in the arcades, or i rarely did play them.

Smashed, is DD Extreme one of the games off the Beats of Rage engine?

If you ever want to play the arcade version of the first Double Dragon, all you have to do is find the Genesis version, it is about 95% accurate.

The only major difference is the game is sped up a little compared to the arcade version, sort of a "Double Dragon Turbo" and the control is a little sloppier (you will get used to it after a level or two).

In fact, the Genesis version of Double Dragon doesn't have the same amount of slowdown that the arcade version did. Very nice!

Plus the Genesis version does allow you to select how many credits/continues you would like and how many lives you start with on each credit.

This tells you all you need to know.

Thank you. All the Double Dragon gameg on the NES, and SNES are great except for Double Dragon 5. Its a horrible fighting game based on the short lived cartoon tv series.

Super Double Dragon is quite good, and I am surprised no one really talks about it.

I am guessing you are referring to the NES version. I was referring mostly to the arcade version.

As is the case with all NES Double Dragon games, Double Dragon 3 (NES) is different from the arcade version.

No, Double Dragon 3 (in any shape or form) isn't as good as the first 2. If anything, the failure of Double Dragon 3 (arcade version) pretty much killed the Double Dragon franchise.

In fact you can look directly to Double Dragon 3 as to why Super Double Dragon (SNES) wasn't more successful. That to me answers sidnotcrazy's question above.

I agree. Plus it was an influential game in the genre. Final Fight, Streets of Rage and River City Ransom aren't possible without Double Dragon.

Double Dragon 3 (NES) is the only version I actually played. It's the only one I've ever owned (I still have it - a blue bootleg cart, obviously). It's interesting to know that the previous versions seem to be better, because I like it a lot. Never went too far, though.
