TIE Fighter. Took everything good about X-Wing, made it better, allowed you to play as the bad guys and... well it just kicked arse

I'm still very partial to Return Of The Jedi: Death Star Battle and The Empire Strikes back on the 2600.

Empire strikes back on the 2600, or Rogue Squadron on the Gamecube (I hated the difficulty level, but my god, the EXPERIENCE of it all.)

At first I would of said Dark Forces then maybe Jedi Knight, however, after starting to beta test the new Star Wars: Galaxies, One word describes it

    WOW

In my opinion the best games are the vector arcade game, Dark Forces, the SNES trilogy, and Rogue Squadron on the N64. I am starting to lose track of what Star Wars games are coming out. Lucas is just pumping them out.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic could've been great, but it's (going to be) awful on virtually every level -- The Phantom Menace of RPGs. Among the lowlights:

    1) A subplot directly lifted from "The Trouble With Tribbles" episode of Star Blecch. (Yes, the classic PC game Elite ripped it off too, but I was more forgiving back then.)
    2) A very thinly disguised "Tower of Hanoi" puzzle.
    3) Reams of interminable dialogue with dozens of interchangably lame characters.
    4) Horrendous combat that tries and miserably fails to combine real-time and turn-based systems.
    5) Subplots with no real gameplay consequences, just different snatches of interminable dialogue.
    6) A very lengthy and incredibly boring subplot that involves a murder trial, and another lengthy/boring subplot that involves a murder investigation. Is this Star Wars or Law and Order?
    7) Wretched mini-games, including a very silly take on blackjack, and a racing sequence that makes Super Bombad Racing look like Gran Turismo.

I was already soured on Star Wars before KOTOR; now I actively, openly despise the franchise.

oldest game, Star wars the arcade game.

Newest game for me was Jedi Knight II.. the single player game was a blast.

Star Wars: Rogue Leader for GCN. This absolutely blew me away, and really made me feel I was in the Star Wars universe. I can't play this game without going off and watching one of the original trilogy movies, and vice versa.

I vote for Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II on Gamecube to be considered the best. The way its gameplay and presentation pull you into the original-trilogy universe is only equalled by the original Atari "Star Wars" vector graphics coin-op. Which I'd rate #2.

    WOW

This game is what Star Wars games should be.
Games that cost too much to play, and are financially unsound projects for their companies to embark on? My brother followed (I think he still does) the game's progress quite closely, but pay-per-month games are NOT a good idea for a company to get involved with. Call in tech support for a few hours, and right there's your monthly fee.

Now for my personal favorites, I have to say Shadows of the Empire (N64) and Return of the Jedi on the SNES would be my two favorites. If I was a big fan of flying games, I'd mention Rogue Squadron for the N64. With that, I realize my knowledge of Star Wars games is more than a few years out of date, the newest one I've played or even really seen would be Rogue Squadron.

Super Star Wars for the SNES. The other two where pretty cool, but Super Star Wars was the best in my opinion.

Atari's original vector arcade game is still the best.
Selling collection, Atari through XBox. Send a PM with whatever games you're looking for.

If you never got to play it in the sit down cockpit version, you missed out. That game blew me away back in the day. MAME just isn't the same as sitting down and playing with the yoke.

For arcade action, the original Star Wars (sit-down cabinet, of course) rules. For sim-style and multiplayer, I liked X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter (with the expansion mission pack) for the PC. On consoles, I've only played the Empire Strikes Back and ROTJ Atari 2600 carts, Rogue Squadron (N64) and Starfighter (PS2), of which I like Starfighter best, mainly because it's the most strategic (which isn't saying much in a line-up of console games).

On the "classic" side of consoles I really enjoyed Super Empire Strikes Back. Had the right amount of difficulty, great graphics and sound, and was a blast to play. It was the best out of the trilogy, just like the movies

On the modern side of consoles it'd be Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Challenging yet fun and graphically stunning on the Xbox. I didn't play the computer version (which is where the console version was ported from) but it just felt like it was MADE for a console.

Arcade: I have to agree that the original Star Wars was and still is awesome. The Trilogy game is pretty, but it's got that shaft-the-player gameplay where you can't avoid damage at certain points of the game.

The developers of the Xbox/GCN versions wrote a lengthy article in Game Developer magazine about how much effort they put into console-izing Jedi Knight II; it's one of the most skillfully done PC-to-console ports ever. (Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Xbox is a first cousin of a PC.)
