Post Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits details sound familiar [Joystiq]

IGN has an interview with Paul Gadbois, producer on Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, the franchise-milking upcoming compilation of what Activision has determined are the most popular songs from every console GH title to date. Canadian development studio and port-expert, Beenox, is putting together the disc, which hits 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii in June. (It's confirmed at $60 for the 360/PS3 release, $40 on Wii and $30 on PS2.)

According to Gadbois, this mash-up of previous Guitar Hero games will offer full band play on all 48 of its included (master) tracks, while also including the music studio, character creation, and online features introduced in Guitar Hero World Tour. Eight tracks-from-the-past have been revealed so far:
    • "Barracuda" by Heart
    • "I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
    • "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister
    • "Killer Queen" by Queen
    • "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against The Machine
    • "Nothin' But A Good Time" by Poison
    • "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains
    • "Through the Fire and Flames" by Dragonforce
What was it The Smiths once sang? "Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!"

I never picked up the first two games, since I never owned a PS2, so I might pick this up...

However, if they stick "Trogdor" or "Because It's Midnite" on there, it's a day one purchase for me

Full band play sounds nice, but this had better not be a full-price title.

Might as well pick this up. Actually, I've never bought a Guitar Hero title. I borrowed Guitar Hero 2 (the best one, IMO) from my friend for an extended period of time and he also gave me his guitar so I can use it for Rock Band. So yeah, I'll probably get this one.

Forgive me for sounding stupid, but does someone want to explain this crap to me? They're telling me that if I want this for 360, then I have to pay double for the exact same game because I don't want it on the PS2 since all of my little plastic instruments are 360-only.

Might we get some of that Rock Band import functionality for songs from other GH games so we can make a really good setlist? If no, then once again GH fails for me (as they have since 3) and my friends and I will continue enjoying RB.

The funny thing is that despite having only 48 songs, and all those songs being ones I have in the previous GH games, at full price this is still a much better value than GH:WT. The 48 songs included in this game will undoubtedly be better than the 86 songs in GH:WT - they'll be picking and choosing the best stuff from the older games, while GH:WT only had a handful of good songs that weren't also in the superior RB series and about 70 garbage songs. If you're only a guitar player there isn't much point in this, but for the vocalists and drummers this is a good package. Still would be better if these songs were in RB and thus free of the horribly broken GH gameplay (especially on vocals), but this is better than nothing. And anyone with at least 2 working synapses in their head knows this is a far better game than GH:Metallica will be.

Of course, all this depends on the good songs actually being chosen from the previous games. Let's hope TtFaF is just included for novelty, not because anybody thinks it is a good song (either musically or playability-wise).

I'll be picking this one up almost guaranteed- I thought GHWT was horrendous compared to Rock Band 2 but already the 8 tracks listed above- when given full band compatibility- make this appealing. Can't wait to try TtFaF on drums.

Master tracks on the older songs are nice, but I cannot justify spending $60 on this. $40, maybe. They're out of their minds pricing it that way. Well, in the consumer's eye, at least.

don't really see the point in purchasing except having some of the songs from gh1 for me to play on the 360 now (since the ps2 gets no love). but... achievement whore that i am, i'll probably end up owning it away. will purchase when i can find a cheap used copy or at least one price drop.

This is just too much. I mean if you wanted guitar hero, chances are you already got these songs. So what the hell does this serve?

There is no probably... this is a fact of life. You will buy it and get achievements because you are an achievement whore.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Maybe if they added some tracks from Guitar Hero 1 that played better, I would consider it.

I could never get the hang of hammer-ons and pull-offs in that version.

Drums and vocals. Like I said, not much point to this if you only play guitar and have the older games, but if you're a drummer or vocalist think of this as 48 good DLC songs for $1.25 each.
