Default Amazon.com starts used game trade-ins

Check it out, you just type what game you want to sell and it tells you the value. Hear that Gamestop? I can predict what I trade in!

I just read about this over at CAG. I guess Toys R Us is doing the same thing. Guess we'll see how things go. Glad to see a site where I can see my trade in values. Gamestops site only shows you the most popular trade ins.

In this case I may actually sell some stuff on here because at Amazon I can actually trade it for something I want. Brick and mortar stores for anything other than recent and moderately-popular games are no longer an option much for me.

Now I can trade in some crap 360 games for used PS1 titles!

I think it's interesting that they offer different prices between the original release and it's greatest hits packaging. The GH are worth less...lol. Finally, someone else "gets it".

$40 for Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for the PS2, that's actually not a bad amount for an "older game" Looks like they did their homework.

$14 for Wii sports? O_o That *sells* used for $14.99...

Can't wait for the "Amazon stole my games!" threads to start popping up...

Hmm. That's pretty sweet. I may consider doing this, because I always buy stuff off of Amazon.

I remember when Best Buy attempted this a few years ago at select stores. I liked the program and got a good amount of loot for trade ins from older games(like game gear). I even saw a copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for PS2 for $25 during that time. Anyway, I don't shop on amazon much but if I can get more money for a trade in than I would selling on ebay, the forums and craigs list then I'd definitely consider it.

More competition is always a good thing. Let's see how this plays out.

I always find this funny because I'm certain it has more to do with aesthetics than anything else. I prefer non-GH versions because they tend to look nicer despite the possibility that perhaps the GH version is the "rarer" one and might even have bug fixes and other useful things. It's funny how the same game can end up with split numbers because of an art variant. Now instead of 100,000 copies, there are 60,000 of the normal version and 40,000 of the GH version. It's completely irrational and yet I'm perfectly ok admitting that I can be just as irrational.

I think I like this better if Amazon gave me a wider range of games they are taking on trade. Great idea though, although you get the price back on an amazon gift card. Meh overall 7 of 10 till I try it out or read an indepth review of it.

They have a few listings for Xbox, GCN, GBA and one listing for GBC... You just need to dig a little.

Why would you sell a game to Amazon for trade-in credit when you could sell it on their marketplace instead?

I'm not sure I'd want to buy any used games off Amazon. Unlike a brick-and-mortar store, they can't inspect each game for scratches and quality before receiving it. I was at a store called Enertainmart a few weeks back, and while the salesguy was finding my games in the big file cabinet, this kid was trying to sell his old Xbox games. The clerk turned him down after inspecting the discs. And he wouldn't buy his iPod Nano (something else they buy and sell used) becaused it was scratched to hell. I wonder if Amazon will put that much care into their selections, or will they just accept anything so as not to have to deal with shipping back unsalable games.

That is exactly what I was thinking! If you're taking the time to go to Amazon to find prices and then taking the time to package everything up you could just as well spend 5 more minutes and put that up on eBay/Amazon's marketplace for more money.

I guess it's nice to see fresh competition in the used game business though, maybe it will take off and they'll start waging war over trade in values some day. The way it stands now it's very rare that trade in values aren't a complete ripoff.

I'd say there's an extremely high probability that the third-party vendor in charge of Amazon's used buying has at least one professional resurfacing machine, if not several. I work at a store that is pretty picky about buying back CDs/DVDs (no resurfacer, nor do the management show any interest in one), and we get people all the time that don't understand that "it plays fine" is not a reasonable excuse as to why we should pay you for a heavily-scratched copy of Miss Congeniality 2.

As far as the Marketplace inquiries, a lot of times things you list on the marketplace as an individual don't always sell quickly or even at all thanks to the fact that many companies selling on Amazon have software that will adjust their prices according to the competition to ensure that they're the lowest. Most of the things I've sold on Amazon have sold because I lowballed myself to ensure a quick sale before seller software initiates a race to the bottom. It all depends, though. Out of print stuff is notoriously overpriced on Amazon (often two or three times what compelted listings on eBay have gone for). It's good if you're selling newer stuff or some out of print items, but the Amazon Marketplace is pretty worthless for mainstream stuff due to the number of copies and the number of people trying to get rid of them.

Traded in some stuff today. Hopefully i'll be getting Resident Evil 5 for pretty close to free after they receive the games. One gripe, though, is that they are very particular about the games they will and won't accept, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. For example, they except just about every PS2, PS3 or portable Harry Potter game, except the one I have (Goblet of Fire on PSP.) Didn't make a lot of sense.
