Default tech question about ps1/ps2 - scratched game skips in my ps1 but not ps2

So I got a lot of used games that included a ps1 (smaller version). Most tested fine, though Final Fantasy VII and IX would skip during the opening videos (they would eventually make it through, but it was rough). I got them resurfaced, and tried again, and FFVII only had a few skips during the end, and FFIX made it through, but totally froze when you first took control of vivi. Just for the hell of it, I put them in the ps2, and both worked perfect.

So the question is, is there some technical explanation on why the ps2 would be better at reading a scratched disc, or perhaps the ps1 I got isn't in the best of shape? I'm kind of hesitant to sell these until I figure it out - I don't want a pissed off buyer

Probably the newwer, stronger laser on the PS2.
They call me Ha-do-ken, cause I'm down, right, fierce.

the guy I got them from said they all worked fine on his ps3, so I'm gonna chalk it up to the ps1 not being in the best of shape
