    Thumbs up

    Confirmed.

I just had to ask cuz I seen all them other shooty twisty corridor games and I think of HACX, and it's spelled all caps too. (For some reason NetHack, the sequel to HACK, is spelled just as I have done). I guess this is one of those moments you can be thankful you aren't so old and decrepit that you can't press the keys right anymore :P~

I played lots of DOS games, it was my main gaming platform for many years between when we got our first computer in early 1992 and when we finally got Windows 95 in 1997. Even after that, I played DOS games regularly for years afterwards and still play them once in a while. The only console I had back then was a Game Boy, so I did most of my gaming on PC... so as such, making a list would be pretty hard. There would be just so many games to mention...

I mean, I did play some Win3.1 games of course, increasingly so as time passed, but most of the best games (aside from obvious exceptions like Civilization II) were for DOS. I recognize quite a few of the games being mentioned in this thread. Not every single one (never heard of Champions of Zulala...), but many.

First, I have to mention Commander Keen. The Commander Keen games were fantastic, the best in the genre on the PC at the time and not really matched since. It was my favorite game series in the early '90s, no question, and it's still one of the best. While I like Keens 4-6 too, I always liked the original trilogy best. Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons is classic PC gaming at its finest. Episode II: The Earth Explodes! is the weak point, if there is one, but the final part more than makes up for it...

Really though, Commander Keen Episode I: Marooned on Mars! has got to be one of my favorite games ever. I got the shareware well before getting the retail, and though I loved the full game, the first episode made the biggest impression. From the scary Zargs (when one of those things runs at you from offscreen it'd often make me jump...) to the silly Yorps, invisible blocks, darkened areas to explore mixed with bright environments... just amazing stuff. When I first realized that there was a hidden area above the first Pogo Shrine's Pogo Stick, for example, it was so cool... and how about the Red Maze City and the hidden level? Or, for that matter, to go forward, the hidden level in Episode III that gives you the whole Intergalactic Alphabet, so you can go back and translate all those signs? Awesome!

... anyway... a list. Hmm... bah, whenever I start one of these, I end up listing like half of the games I own (or like) for the platform. It'll be no different this time, I think. :lol (nope...)

Freeware/Shareware Games (* for titles I actually own the full version of and not just shareware, or + for where the full version is free)
    --
+CaveQuest - almost certainly the first 'RPG' I ever played...
    *Commander Keen (1-3, 4, and 6; I didn't have 5 until recently)
    Major Stryker
*Raptor: Call of the Shadows - the best PC-exclusive shmup there is!
Epic Pinball - I only have ever had the demo Android table, but when I first played this, I was extremely impressed. It was so much better than any pinball game I had seen before...
+Star Goose - I liked this one too...
Math Rescue/Word Rescue - fun, for learning games.
+Llamatron 2112 - The best dual-stick (Robotron-style) shooter ever. The controls aren't as good as in the original Atari ST version, but this one's great anyway... I'm pretty good at this game I think, as I played it a lot.
+Castle Adventure - Fantastic game! ASCII art action/adventure game where you explore a castle and beyond. I don't think we ever finished it, but I sure did have a lot of fun with this one... it's really a fantastic game for its time.
SkyRoads (now +) - it's now freeware and I have that, but back then I just had the shareware, which just had a few tracks
*Jetpack - now freeware, but I have the full, disk version.
*Hugo's House of Horrors (and its two sequels -- the first graphic adventures I played... still old favorites of mine, particularly the first one. Short and easy once you know how to beat it, but pretty fun anyway. I have Hugo's House of Horrors and Hugo 3: Jungle of Doom registered, but not Hugo 2: Whodunnit?. The shareware versions are complete, though, so I've beaten that one anyway. We registered the first one because we were stuck and needed the promised hint guide...
King Arthur's K.O.R.T. - simple Risk-like TBS, but in medieval Britain. Fun stuff for a quick play. I think the shareware was full... maybe they wanted you to buy an improved version, though, like Hexxagon. Not certain...
Hexxagon - Full game, but they wanted to sell you a followup. This great game is one of the best boardgames of the PC shareware era, play it!
Secret Agent - liked this one quite a bit... only played episode 1, though.
    Crystal Caves
    Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
    *Duke Nukem II
Realms of Chaos - I'd like to get the full version of this one sometime. Good platformer.
    Kroz
+Xerix - I mostly remember this for the intro cutscene... I think it was a full game, though shareware.
+Arcade Volleyball - The classic! This CGA sidescrolling volleyball game was one of the first we had. The computer is so good... great game even so, though!
    Jill of the Jungle
Xargon - interesting story, for a game of the time...
*Traffic Department 2192 - One of the first games I played with a truly great, well written story. The gameplay never gets past average, and is very easy to exploit in all but the escort missions, but the great story, with all its many twists and turns across the three episodes, kept me playing. I really, really like this game... the gamplay's fun enough to keep me interested, and the story's great. At the beginning I'd never have guessed the kind of places it would go...
+Galactix - Good opening effort from the guy who went on to make the great Raptor. Play this! Single-screen shooter style, weird controls, but it works...
Tyrian - sure I have the freeware Tyrian 2000, but I've never gotten far in it... great game though, and Raptor's biggest competitor.
Overkill - lesser known Epic shmup. I really, really liked the shareware of this one, I wish I had the full version!
Wolfenstein 3D - Barely got anywhere before getting bored, but this was a pretty innovative, and interesting, game, for sure...
*EGA Trek - destroy those things that totally aren't Romulans and Klingons!
*Dark Ages -- Fantastic shareware, but it is disappointing that the full version adds no new graphics, music, weapons, or anything, just two more levels with the exact same art and style as the first one. Still, I loved the first one, so that's not so bad... it's a very interesting, unique platformer with some RPG elements (expandable health, weapons to find, items you must find to progress), soundblaster music (very early for that!), and very nice graphics for the time (wow, waving grass! ).
Zone 66 - top-down flying shooter where you have to destroy bases. Interesting intro story told with a long cutscene. Great music and graphics. VERY Windows-intolerant, you basically needed a boot disk to make it work, though in these days of DOSBox, that doesn't matter. Really good game, I'd like to play the full game someday. I do have the retail "Levels 3 and 4" pack as well as the (level 1 only) shareware, but not the rest of the game... there were 8 levels I think.
Jazz Jackrabbit - always meant to get this sometime, but somehow never did... it deserves its reputation for being pretty good, I would say.

    Retail games
    --
Warcraft: Orcs and Humans - my first real RTS... the game that truly made me a Blizzard fan. Archaic now, but it was an amazing game for its time!
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (plus expansion) - this runs too fast on new computers and is best played on Win95 in the WCII BNE, but I have the originals as well of course.
Civilization - I like Civ II more, but this one's a classic of course...
Quest for Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero (VGA version) - another of my favorite games of all time... have this on disk.
Quest for Glory Collector's Series - Got this a few years back locally for very cheap (this thing's expensive online!). QFGIV in particular is stunningly great, as good as the first one. Play the DOS, not Win3.1, version, it's much better (and fullscreen).
Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle - not my favorite Lucasarts adventure, but it is pretty good for sure.
The Secret of Monkey Island - the original... play it, now!
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - one of Lucasarts' best ever...
The Dig - an underappreciated classic
Lords of the Realm II -- outstanding game, sort of like the pre-Total War... but with better province management and less fun battles. I liked this game a lot, but it's aged in some ways... particularly combat, which never was the best part of the game to begin with. Note that you need to install the Win95 version to use the expansion pack; only the base game works with DOS.
Heroes of Might & Magic II (and its expansion) - another of the best strategy games ever. Truly outstanding with great gameplay, graphics, sound, music, and design. The game has both Win95 and DOS versions on the disc.
Rayman - way too hard... but it's too good to not list here anyway.
Space Quest V - so funny... frustrating like all Sierra adventures, but it's really funny!
King's Quest VII - the only KQ I've actually beaten... it is also on Win95, but I played the DOS version because it was fullscreen. Pretty good, though not Sierra's best.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault - one of the first CD games we owned, with Day of the Tentacle and Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis. I know a lot of people hate it, but I still like this game... I've beaten it several times on both PC and Sega CD, and it's always fun and challenging. Frustrating too, and the controls aren't great (particularly touchy on PC...), and the save system on PC (you only get a password every four levels) is really annoying, but still, I like it. So much of this game's script is so memorable for me... I have a good chunk of it memorized, I think ("What, in the movie C-3PO doesn't say 'are you sure this thing is safe' after the pod launched? Really? But that's how I remember it..." ). Simple but fun. Oh, the on-foot target-shooting levels are a pain, and level 3 is one of the hardest and most annoying in the whole game.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 - I didn't like it quite as much as the first, but it's still solid fun. Nice FMV!
Star Wars: TIE Fighter (Collector's CD-ROM) - One of the three or four best games ever made, this all-time classic is something everyone should have played. You need a joystick, but it's an absolute must-play, really. Games don't get better than this.
The Lost Vikings - the first Blizzard game I owned... quite fun platform-puzzler with a great sense of humor.
Zork 1 - one of the only text adventures I have really played... good stuff, though!
The Oregon Trail - how couldn't you like this game?
Midnight Rescue - (Super Solvers) English class stuff wasn't my favorite, but the theme and game design is fantastic.
Operation Neptune - (Super Solvers) Math game with sidescrolling underwater submarine shooting! Fantastic game!
EcoQuest: The Search for Cetus - fun for kids, but a bit simplistic for adults... liked it when I was younger, though.
Spectre VR - more famous on the Mac, but it was on PC too
    Bumpy - interesting platformer
    Hexen - fun medieval Doom-clone
Castles and its expansion The Northern Campaign - The original castle sim. Castles is totally focused on castle-building. You build a castle, defend it as it is built, and then move on to the next one once it is complete. You have to carefully manage (and micromanage) the construction of every single piece of the castle, defend it from attacks, plan your finances, feed and pay your workers, respond to various requests or questions from people... as I've always loved castles, I thought this game was fantastic. I mean, it's a game about castles! How can you get better than that? Really though, while the interface is archaic, the game is pretty good, and unique in its total focus on castle-building. Nothing else quite matches that, not even the Stronghold games. The expansion is great, adding a longer, harder campaign and other extras.
Castles II: Siege and Conquest - completely different from the original, this game is pretty much like Lords of the Realm more than anything. Solid game, but disappointing for people like me who wanted something more like the original... though overall, it's another great medieval-themed game.
Unnatural Selection - one of Maxis' more interesting and unique games, this genetic engeneering sim is a pretty good game. It was really hard for me at the time, but once you understand it, it's really engaging. Read that very thick manual!
Screamer 2 - drift racing... fast and very nice looking for the time.
Whiplash - good futuristic-ish racing game
Sid & Al's Incredible Toons - The Incredible Machine, cartoon-style. Fantastic game!
Hardball III (with Major League Players Disk) - my favorite baseball game ever, I loved this game
Descent - I only ever beat like two levels, but always thought it was really impressive.
Betrayal at Krondor - one of the great PC RPGs...
Caesar II - Roman SimCity? Sure, but it was also extremely difficult... I never beat two levels before like last year, despite owning it since it was new. I did like it, but it was just so hard... I saw that 'galley slave' video a lot. Oh well, the game's great anyway.
    SimCity - of course
SimCity 2000 - maybe my favorite Maxis game ever... just about perfect.
    Lemmings
Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament - I've always loved the Micro Machines games, and this one's one of the best!

Demos (retail games that I only played the demo of but want to mention anyway)
    --
Worms - Worms 2 was the one that really made it great, but the first was pretty good before that.
Mass Destruction - blow stuff up!
Star Fighter - really interesting game, look up some videos of the 3DO version on Youtube...

Hmm, that list is definitely way too long to be helpful at all... oh well. I'm not deleting anything.

Gamespy did a pretty nifty article on this subject recently - at least, if you can still call something like this nifty after it's been done a few dozen times.

I was always more of a turn based strategy fan.

A few that pop up in my mind are:
    Master of Orion
    Civilization
    Empire Deluxe
Heroes of Might and Magic II
    Machiavelli the Prince

Though there's so many more that I'm just forgetting about.

I see they're just calling them "GameSpy Staff" now. I wonder if it's anybody I know - the last few years have seemed somewhat like this, but anyway.

Champions of Zulula I found on a lark a long time ago. It's certainly not the greatest game by any stretch of the imagination, but I still found it fun. Unfortunately, in all these years I've only been able to track down the shareware version. If anyone knows where I can buy a legit copy or has ever found/cracked a complete copy, please let me know.

Nice. You just reminded me to play a few of these games (which I have sitting around). Well, I'm not sure I could get into F-15 SE, but 25th Anniversary is definitely a must.

The original Gunship I have on X68000, probably doesn't hold a candle to playing the sequel on a fast PC though.

If you don't have the CD-ROM version with voice acting from the original cast, it's not hard to find a download for it.

I bought a dirt cheap sealed copy back in '07 (i think?). Something like $15 off of ebay or whatever. Totally worth it. Overall I liked it better than Judgment Rites, though Judgment Rites didn't suffer from that horrifically difficult end battle.

Some people I've talked to that had pirated the game in their younger days and didn't have the copy protection have joked about how the ending wasn't all that difficult after so many battles with the pirates. With the copy protection (a map), you can easily see which planet you have to hop to. If you haven't got it then you're stuck hopping between the various planets and hoping you hit the right one; a wrong choice leads to a battle with some pirate vessels.

Maybe after a couple dozen practice battles then the intro and ending would be a hell of a lot easier, sure. God damn was that last fight frustrating.

Judgment Rites had such funky background art. Like, every scene had to have a wonky perspective, so the character sprites never fit in right. Some really neat writing, though.

    I bet I have the 3.5" version. I'll see.

Funny to think that the first "rare" game my folks' house was bought by my dad. Probably the only Trek related thing that's kept up its value too. Edit: Oh wow, those classic VHS tapes of TOS are worth sub-$5 now. Nice!

I must scan it sometime; it's got some really, really bad cover art.

Onto the game itself, I find myself playing the shareware off and on now and then. For some reason this game grips me while Wolf3D never really did - for one, there seems to be more to do.

Other note: There were at least two major versions of the graphics in the game, with what I think was an old style having "taller" looking characters, a bit sketchy but rather cool, and a "newer" one with more distinct separated colors but also looking rather chunky and silly. The face on the Wikipedia article's screenshots seems to be from the EDIT later version. This page seems to have the early version graphics.

Also, the original Hugo trilogy is amazing and I must replay the games sometime. I don't think I got through the second one entirely, however (the mansion / will-inspired whodunit thingamajig with random forest scenes. OOER!)

I wasn't aware that it was linked to a trilogy, though it's interesting to see from that link you posted that the other games don't seem to remotely resemble Nitemare.

The way I came across that game was when I was a kid, I somehow got my hands on one of those CDs that was packed with about a zillion shareware games. That's also how I first came in contact with Descent, which I also love but was already mentioned, and there was also Ken's Labyrinth and a bunch of other games which mostly sucked or didn't work for one reason or another, and then Nitemare-3D.

I liked Nitemare because of the whole Haunted House setting with zombies and Frankenstein monsters and vampire bats, which I really hadn't seen before in an FPS. I also liked how it was sort of reminiscent of Curse of the Catacombs (Catacomb 3-D); like how your character portrait in the HUD would slowly turn into a bloodied, dessicated corpse as you got more damaged, though I think in Nitemare you actually turned into a skeleton. Either way, much more dramatic and interesting than in Wolfenstein, so it was a nice touch.

It was kind of a pain in the ass to play though at the time. It was one of those games that you had to reboot into "Extended Mode" or something like that for it to work, and even then I remember it crashing many times. Still, it was good fun.
