Default THANK YO MARIO! OH DAISY! - wait a sec... spelling mistake in Super Mario Land?

I was playing Super Mario Land tonight and found a spelling mistake that I never noticed before. I snapped a pic of the game after I beat the first boss:

Thank yo mario? After the 2nd, 3rd and 4th bosses it said "thank you mario". Does anyone else's copy do this?

Also... worst Mario last boss ever:

Spelling mistake in a Japanese video game translated to Inglez? Oh you!

    Anyway, this sounds correct.

Not a tough game, is it? I beat it some time ago, twice through maybe (if it has a loop, I did it).

I've played through the U.S. and Japanese releases (which are exactly the same if I recall) and never had that spelling error happen.

Speaking of SML I did score 999,999 a few months ago, finally:

I remember when the Gameboy first came out and, of course, I had to have the latest Mario game. I have played through it many times since then and that is something I am pretty sure I would have noticed, but I could be wrong. I'll have to pull out my copy and see if I can replicate the missing letter.

Just played through world one on my copy on my GB, the U displays properly after rescuing the first "Daisy".

Oh, what are you playing that on there, an actual cart or emulation? That shouldn't matter, though, I just played world 1 on emulation too and it was the same, also correct. Great game, it was one of the games I got with my Game Boy... sure it's pretty easy now, but when I first got it it was tough enough. 12 levels with no saving? That was a challenge. Most all the games I was playing on PC had saving... still though, it was great.

It still is great, actually. Sure everything is small, but it uses the small size for large, interesting level layouts. Later platformers like Mario Land 2 or the Wario Land games use huge sprites, which means less can happen on each screen. I do like Wario Land best overall, large sprite and all, but the small sprites definitely have some good points as well...

I've had the missing "U" on my copy as well. It seems to happen randomly, so it's probably just a glitch.

As for Tatanga being a lame final boss... sure, he's lame now, but when I was ten years old, and I finally beat that stupid cloud boss, the music suddenly took a dramatic turn when this giant alien ship appeared, it was like the most epic thing ever!

It's a physical cart in my Super Gameboy.

I know what you mean, but still... what a crazy turn of events for a Mario game. My wife walked into the room while I was on the last level and asked what I was playing. At first she didn't believe it was a Mario game since he was flying in an airplane and the last boss was that thing. Absolutely nuts.

I'm still waiting for Tatanga to appear as a playable character in the next Mario Party or Smash Bros. People have been dying to know what he's been up to.

Well, maybe nobody cares about Tatanga. But if they can bring back Daisy...

Well, considering the team that made it went on to make the Wario Ware series...

Funny, i was playing 'Wheel of Fortune' the other night and the same sort of thing was happening to me too.

Cleaned the connectors but still glitching with missing letters all the time.

Are you sure that you just hadn't solved the puzzle yet?

I agree, I think it is a connectors issue.

Someone has to point out that Tatanga was the boss of the Space Zone in SML2. I volunteer!

Happened to my as well, on my old brick gameboy with an original cart. It didn't happen every time though, seems to be random.

I tried and didn't have a problem with any missing letters either.

I was waiting for the answer to if it was the actual game or played from emulation, but I realized it doesn't really matter. If the problem was there when the rom was dumped, then the problem would always appear and it would look like it was part of the game. Of course, a bad connection between the physical game and the system would net the same result.

In either case, it looks like we have it figured out now.

Just to be sure, before making that last post I played through world 1 on a Game Boy original, Super Game Boy, Game Boy Player, and in emulation (What? It's a great game, and the first world doesn't take long...).

The text appeared properly all four times.

So yeah, I agree with the 'dirt on the contacts' theory. That definitely messes games up. The letter isn't missing, text just fails to properly display sometimes.

Its a typo in earlier versions of mario land, 1.1 fixed that and a few other bugs.
