Default Intellivision Overlays: the extended dance remixes.

With so many web sites devoted to the hobby these days, it's hard to find anything unique to offer folks aside from an opinion. And ya know, I feel the need to offer something different. For quite some time, I've been "remixing" my scanned Intellivision overlays, and I've been mighty pleased with some of my recent results.

    Star Strike (INTV)

    Demon Attack (INTV)

    Tron Deadly Discs (INTV)

And some 5200 overlays for ya too, though not nearly as elaborate:

    Defender (5200)

    Qix (5200)

Super Pac-Man (5200) (technically, not required, but I thought it'd be neat to have one)

I'll be doing more in the future. I know that these may not appeal to purists out there, but if you don't have 'em, or just want some different ones, enjoy.

This message brought to you by a sleepless night, a visit from the muse, the new Blue Man Group CD, Paint Shop Pro, and several Flaming Pear Graphics plug-ins.

    WOW. What a GREAT idea!

Where can I buy a set? Seriously - if you have the time you should look into producing these images on similar quality plastic the originals had (or at least something sturdy that would fit in the Intellivision controller).

    Nice work, Mr. PDF.

Great work! You should post it to some of the Intellivision sites so that others can enjoy your work. They aren't exactly in the classical style, but interesting nonetheless.

In case anyone's interested, here's the link for instructions on how you can print out Jpegs like these on your printer to make some nice overlays. I did it myself and they look damn fine.

I've got a challenge for you, Phos... Vectrex screen overlays! It'd be interesting to see what you'd come up with for those.

I cant remember the Vectrex Screen Dimensions.

Other than a 24 inch roll, nobody makes transparency sheets larger than letter size (I think Epson or HP makes the roll).

And who the hell has a plotter capable of using the rolls?

Well, if the vectrex screen is smaller than letter size, I guess theer's no problem...

    Great idea, though, ManekiNeko.

I believe they make an 11 x 17 transparency sheet that can be ran on digital laser printers. My store does not carry it, but I am sure they can be ordered.

Glad everyone liked 'em! I gotta say, my favorite is still Star Strike. I try to keep something of the "classical style" in there whenever possible, some kind of link to the past (in SS's case, it was the green "trench") to ground things. As for putting 'em online - stand by, my 5200 and INTV overlay galleries are coming soon. I had been creating these to coincide with specific game reviews, but I think at this point I'll just finish the overlays and create a special page where you can just pick those up and print them out, without waiting for the corresponding review to be written/posted.

As for printing these out...I use a fairly thin glossy photo paper for my own stuff. Now, after a while, you'll probably punch a hole through it (more of a concern in games like Tron Deadly Discs where the keypad is an active part of game play, and not just an occasional-use thing), but the same holds true for some of the INTV overlays as well.

I'm working on a remixed overlay for TRUCKIN' next. I've got some cool ideas for that one...

If anyone's that interested, I may see about hauling some of these along to CGE and/or OKGE - let me figure a couple of things out before I start taking "orders" though.

    Cool! The pitcher is dancing!!

Very nice, and once again, an EXCELLENT idea. This sort of thing is great for the hobby in my opinion.

Hey, while I'm at it - anyone have a Shark! Shark! overlay they can scan for me? I haven't got any overlays for that game (or maybe it doesn't have any). PM me if you can scan one and e-mail the file to me. Thanks!

Hmmmm..You know what, I think I might have the overlays to Shark Shark, but no game. I'll have to crack open the box I sealed my intelly into 3 years ago and check.

Default Just when you thought it was safe...

OK, request fulfilled. This one became an experiment in completely redoing every element of the original:

    Shark! Shark!

I liked this one so much that I may write to the Intellivision Productions guys and let them know about these.

EDIT: here's another one, though it's a bit of a quickie. But it's so tasty.

    Burgertime

I've never played Shark! Shark!, so that might influence my opinion some, but despite it's quickie status, I like the Burgertime overlay much more than the Shark! Shark! overlay. Just my 2¢ .

Another new overlay for you. You can choose from the original overlay for Space Battle, or the "Remixed" edition which is just a bit of a nod toward Space Battle's origins (i.e. almost the first official Battlestar Galactica game). Enjoy!

And remember, for...well, not for all of your overlay needs, but definitely for some, check out:

I like the remixed Space Battle. It gives some life to what used to be a fairly dull overlay. Keep up the good work, PDF!

Actually I'd be very interested in purchasing Vectrex overlay reproductions along with some Intellivions & Atari 5200 overlay reproductions. But most definately Vectrex overlays because they effect the game visuals. But I have quite a few loose Intellivision & Atari 5200 carts that I'd like to get overlays for. You should consider selling them. I'd like to buy some.
