Default Video Game Retail Stories, Circa 2000.

There was an entertaining blog online called "Acts of Gord". It was updated frequently by this guy that owned a video game store in Canada. There's some pretty amusing stories here. It's pretty old, but I figure it might be old enough to be interesting again to those of you that read it a long time ago.

    Here's the url: http://www.actsofgord.com/

    And here's a sample story:

" I'm A Master Hacker! Can I Have Free Stuff?

Originally this lad was dismissed as an idiot as he was going on about how he took six broken PS1's and made three working ones with them... Then went on to try and rent a machine.

"If you've got 3 working ones, why do you want to rent one?" questioned Gord.

"Uhm... ya... So I want to program, and I've got four programs I'm working on right now, so I need a fourth machine. Because you see, to program a PS1, you need to leave it hooked up to the computer the whole time you're writing the one game."

"I'm sorry. It's time for you to go." spoke the Gord.

Then he brings his dad in to sign up an account, and then it's "Why do I need ID or a deposit to rent a machine?" and "$5 to rent a machine? You can buy them for $140!"

    You just know they're related."

    and

    "Tournament Where Everyone Wins!
In the middle of a Tekken 2 tournament with about 70 contestants someone's father comes up to the Gord.

"My son was eliminated in the first round."

"Well, lots of people were eliminated in the first round."

    "Why is he already out?"

"I would take a guess and say about 35 people were eliminated, and that would be half the people who entered. It's an elimination ladder. In the end there can be only one."

"I want him to be put back in!"

"And why would I do that? I put him in, I have to put everyone back in."

    "So?"

    "Then it's hardly a tournament."

    "This isn't a fair tournament."

"Do you even understand the concept of a tournament?"

And the winner of the tournament won the controllers that were opened for the tournament (worth $80), and $20 in cash. Second place was a can of coke and an autographed picture of Gord. Third place was $20.

The Gord likes to remind people that second place is just the first loser."

Ah yes... I remember stumbling upon this a few years ago... I never could decide if The Gord was actually a real person, or merely how the author wished he could have reacted to those situations...

Still, an awesome read, especially for veterans of the retail trenches.

Ahh... I used to read Gord all of the time during my retail sentence.

He was my hero, real or not.
