Nice. I really enjoyed your first book. Will this one only cover NES, Master System, and Atari 7800, or will it include the XEGS or something else?

    Thanks!

It will cover every U.S. release for the NES, SMS, and 7800.

Here's one description of the book:

Introduced by Bill “The Game Doctor” Kunkel, one of the most important figures in all of classic gaming, Classic Home Video Games Vol. 2 contains detailed descriptions/reviews of every U.S.-released game for the Nintendo NES, one of the best, most popular video game systems ever produced. The book also contains detailed descriptions/reviews of every U.S.-released game for the Atari 7800 (revised, expanded, and updated from Classic Home Video Games 1972-1984) and the Sega Master System, both of which maintain a loyal fan base to this day.

Organized alphabetically by console brand, each chapter in this book includes a description of the game system, followed by substantive, literate, fun-to-read entries for every game released for that console, regardless of when the game was produced (meaning hundreds of games are covered). Each video game entry includes publisher/developer data and the release year, along with gameplay information and, usually, the author’s critique. A glossary provides a helpful guide to the classic video game genres and terms referenced throughout the work, and a preface provides a look at the industry at the time (and how it relates to gaming today), along with anecdotes from the author, a full-time writer who has been a devoted gamer and game collector since the days of Pong, Pitfall!, and Pac-Man.

Classic Home Video Games 1985-1988, which is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Classic Home Video Games, 1972-1984, also contains photos, historical information, and comparisons to arcade classics, computer games, and similar games for other consoles. Aimed at hardcore gamers, casual fans, and pop culture scholars alike, Classic Home Video Games 1985-1988 is must-reading for anyone interested in the history of the industry and the playability of its games, namely that fondly remembered era that gave us the Atari 7800, the Sega Master System, and the Nintendo NES.

Looks great. I was hoping more of these books would come out covering the later systems in the 80's. This will be a day 1 purchase for me. Thanks for sharing.

Looking forward to it - nice visual continuity with the cover of the first book, too.

Thanks, Earl. I like what the publisher (McFarland) has done with the covers, though their policy is to not involve the author in the process. They want no feedback whatsover from the author regarding cover design--no opinions, suggestions, nothing.

I was wondering why only cover 3-4 years (1985-1988)? At first I thought there was a typo or something, and I thought it was going to be 1985-1998...

That's a good question. The titular years, 1985-1988, refer to the consoles released during that time: NES (1985), SMS (1986), and Atari 7800 (1986). All the games for those systems will be covered, including the titles released in 1989 and in the 1990s.

The reason 1989, 1990, etc. are not mentioned in the title is because other systems (Genesis, etc.) were released during those years, and future volumes are in the works (Classic Home Video Games 1989-1990, for example).

The important thing to know is that EVERY U.S.-released game for the NES, Master System, and Atari 7800 is given a full write-up, regardless of the release date.

    Thanks for asking!
