Default MMMC #12 - Moon Shuttle

Hey there everyone, sorry I didn't bug you all for nominations. Luckily, Vectorman0 tossed in a few. After a complicated selection process (if anyone finds a ferret with the number 3 painted on the back, please contact me) we have this week's game... which I'll talk about after the usual stuff.

    Club Rules

    01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

    02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

    03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

On it's surface, Nichibitsu's Moon Shuttle looks like an amazingly simple game. And considering it is from 1981, it's not the flashiest game ever. But don't let it fool you, it get's tough fast! Fight through asteroid fields, and then waves of erratically moving ships!

    Without further ado: ROM sources!

    Flack is hosting at http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/

and 2DSkillz will have the games ROMs at http://www.retrogoggles.com/

Previous MMMC choices: Jump Coaster, Rampart, Jungler, Ninja Emaki, Port Man, Psycho Soldier, Metamoqester, Gunbarich, Sengoku (series), Snacks'n Jackson, Metro-Cross.

    Have fun this week!

Note that this game only works on MAME 130 and above; the ROM hasn't changed across MAME versions, but there is a bug where the screen is shifted and wrapped. MAWS says this was fixed in v124u1, but my v128 install wouldn't display it correctly either. Maybe it works in v129, I don't know.

My MAME machine has v124 installed, so I can't play it.

I didn't know there were issues with it...I use v129u2 and it works fine.

Anyone else having issues? If so, we may consider adding / switching games for the week.

I suggested this game because I think it is a solid game that I rarely see mentioned.

I played this last night using MAMEoX128 Plus on My Xbox, which I believe is running MAME 0.84. I'll play for score tonight!

Works fine in v0.76 as well. The status area is halfway off the right side of the screen but it doesn't harm gameplay any.

Oh no, not more asteroid fields! I just played Starfox 64 for the first time in years the other day and couldn't stop laughing at how bad I navigated the asteroids on there. Not much different here. At first it seems like it should be easy but you start to feel trapped pretty quickly. I kept getting the message that I did "so so". I'll have to try harder when I get some more time.

For next week, since everyone is on a Ghostbusters kick now, how about The Real Ghostbusters?

Not a bad idea about The Real Ghostbusters.

I have an idea I want to float out there, but it can wait a week.

Any comments on The Real Ghostbusters for next week? And keep playing Moon Shuttle! This game is crazy hard, in my humble opinion.

My best score is around 3450 so far.

5680 is my peak, don't think I'll be able to do much better. The third wave of attackers is intense.

5000 exact is the best I was able to do. Quickly moving up and down firing like crazy on the asteroid levels is what got me most of the points. Those weird ships that looked like 2 basket balls stuck together were almost impossible for me to hit at first, but after recognizing the patterns they weren't too bad. Those thin little ships get me every time though.

The high score showing up in my emulator is 12,xxx. Unfortunately there is a glitch that gives me 3 extra lives, and I can't recall if I got this score legitimately or if I had extra lives and didn't notice.

Hey I gotta post whenever it's a game I like and this was a closet favorite of mine back in the day.. unfortunately the store where it was located was a little far from where I lived so I only got to see it on the rare occasions my mom would go there. I then I went there one day, and it was gone.. sad days

I actually played a remake of this on the PC a number of years ago, so the game has some fans. I'll try and get around to playing it in Mame and posting my score as well Good pick sc00t.
