Default Is this a fair trade? PC Engine

Found this ad on Craigslist and thought it looked interesting, but didn't know if it was worth it.

"Trade: My NEC import PC engine for your 360 (07846)

Imported PC engine. Does not come with DC 9V adapter, A/V cables or the controllers. The games are somewhere buried in the garage or basement.. Inside it has a CD-rom 2 interface and PC engine "core grafx" interface. serial is 9Y029604A."

How much would I need to spend on top of this in order to get it up and running?

The PC Engine without the CD attachment goes for less than $100. Heck, you can get a Duo for around $150 shipped. Very poor deal.

Ok thanks a lot guys. Good to know. Just checking, but a Japanese Duo can play Japanese hucards and Japanese and American CDs? What about super CDs?

Before writing it off too quickly, I'd ask about the games.

If it comes with two games no.
If it comes with 100 games probably.
If it comes with a purple barney and a US Magical Chase, yes.

Run, don't walk away from that deal. Horrid. It's probably got the same trade value as a 360 hard drive, not an entire 360.

Original PC Engine systems, the Core Grafx and Core Grafx II consoles run anywhere from the equivalent of $5-$50 here in Japan, depending on how dirty the console is. A yellowed white PC Engine with no hook-ups will be $5-$15, while a very nice looking system with all hook-ups, controller and perhaps even boxed will usually be between $30-$50 (or more, if you want to get ripped off in Akihabara). So, if you think a system worth about $15 plus shipping is worth the cost of a 360 then go for it.

In other words, I totally agree with the others here that this is a horrible deal. The guy is just trying to scam someone.

He says he has a CD-ROM2 interface unit. Unless he doesn't know what he's talking about(VERY likely), that means he doesn't even have the CD add-on. He has the attachment to put the CD Add-on into. Not only that, but he doesn't mention having a CD system card. Without that, the CD add-on is completely useless. The add-on unit NEEDS a CD system card (HuCard). System card 2.0 is minimum to play basically any regular CD game. 3.0 is really what you need because it will play any regular CD game and Super CD games. You could also get an arcade card to play Arcade CD games with... but to be honest, unless you're hardcore into collection PC Engine games, you'll probably never use it.

If you get a Duo, Duo-R, Duo-RX or a Super CD-Rom2 add-on (the kind that goes on the back and matches the Core Grafx II colour scheme, attached to one of the three PCE core systems), then you don't need to piss around with system cards. You're correct in that they will all be able to read Japanese HuCards, Japanese CDs/Super CDs and American CDs/Super CDs. If you really want to play Arcade CDs, then you'll still need to get an Arcade system card.

IMO, the original CD-ROM2 add-on is the worst option for playing PCE CD games. The only reason to get one is if you're collecting. I totally recommend getting a PC Engine in some form (the Duo is your easiest option), but do not even give this guy an e-mail unless it's to tell him off for trying to rip others off.

The regular Duo has a number of problems it can develop over time. Same w/ the original CD-ROM2. *is trying to save up for a Super Grafx w/ Super CD-ROM2*
