Default About your new original Magnavox Odyssey (1) (One)

A few points you may wish to consider:
It requires a proprietary video switchbox, which is a pain to get ahold of. The video switch box turns the system on and off. If you don't have one of these, you are without a paddle.

It requires a proprietary Magnavox cable. It is similar to that used by early models of the Odyssey 2. It looks like a straight prong.

The system uses Magnavox Part No 1A9179 Input 117V AC 60Hx 3W and Outputs 9v DC 40mA. The connector is, um, 1/16 inch I think.

Cartridge 2 is a fine cart to test both controllers with. You should be able to see both controllers move when this cart is powered up. There are no other graphics aside from the dots that the controllers move.

Be very careful when you try to clean anything on the system, especially the faux woodgrain on the controllers. Windex or Mr. Clean or any Benzene based cleaner will remove the woodgrain and letter clean off. Even wiping the cables without any solvent tends to change their color. Beware!

Reseating the cart may solve many of your problems. The connectors tend to lose contact over the years. And these babies are old.

The odyssey 300's, 500's, etc. came with switchboxs that can be used on the magnavox Odyssey. If your Odyssey is missing the switchbox, you can get one of the above systems pretty cheap and take the switchbox from it.

I would like to see this proven. I should have tested it when I was messing with my systems. The Odyssey is turned on by the switch. Or is it? Is it always on when it's plugged in?

We need someones to confirm that it's not simply plug compatibility, and it truly does operate with an O1.

The Odyssey is turned on by the gamecard. Check the schematic and you will see that one of the jumpers on each card simply connects the power inside the system. Notice that on the cards, http://www.pong-story.com/odycarts.htm, on the far right two adjacent pins are connected together. This turns the system on.

Another interesting tidbit: The Odyssey can output on both channels three and four, but you must open up the console to get to the switch.

edit: Perhaps you're thinking of the RCA Studio II's switchbox? I'm pretty sure that one supplied power to the unit, ala 5200.

You dont have to open the system to change the channel. Open the battery compartment and use something like a screw driver to move the switch.
