How good is the PS3 at upscaling PS2 games?

Welp, I got a slim PS3 yesterday at Best Buy. I had a couple of gift cards, so I only ended up paying $224. Got it hooked up with HDMI and love it so far. PS1 games look pretty bad on it though. With smoothing on, they look too blurry but without it, they look too pixel-y and chunky. Color looks dull too. I imagine PS2 games wouldn't look much different if I had a BC model, so I'm happy with what I've got.

It sucks that I have to buy a $60 adapter to use my Harmony remote with it though.

You know, thats exactly what happened to me with San Andreas when I had my PS3 hooked up via an S-Video cable. As soon as I had upgraded to an HDMI cable, everything changed and became crystal clear...

That's interesting. I had the PS3 connected via component cables, not HDMI. I'll have to try an HDMI cable and see if it helps.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised at that too. When I was adding the PS3 function to my Harmony 620 with the Logitech software, a pop-up appeared saying I needed to get this adapter in order to use it:

Strange since the remote works flawlessly with my 360, so I was expecting no issues with the PS3. Does the PS3 have an IR receiver on it? Or is it all bluetooth?

On PS1 games, sheesh, you'd think they could do better. Strange how I can download a free PS1 on PC emulator, developed several years ago, that gets the graphics really nice on a Pentium III, and their software emulator doesn't.

The PS3 is bluetooth only...hence the adapter for the Harmony.

Most of the games look decent on the 60gig, I can't say I actually care for the smoothing at all. I like the widescreen stretch support for the few ps1 and ps2 games that do it.

What I don't like is if you set a ps2 game to it's progressive scan mode, you lose everything, like the widescreen stretch option. From what I remember, Outrun 2006 and Red Star end up all aspect screwed in progressive scan mode on both my displays.

That's true, I forgot about that. If the game does support progressive scan you lose everything (I believe this happened in God of War II as well). That sucks though...
