Default What's the word on DS screen replacement lately?

My DS touch screen seems to have suffered considerable abuse at my hands. Of course, it's long out of warranty.

If EB Games had another trade-in promo whereby I could get a fresh DS Lite by trading in my old one for $10, I'd spring for that, but I don't know if that is ever going to happen again. Are these things easily replaceable if one has a tri-wing screwdriver? Is it advisable to do it that way? What about sending it in to Nintendo?

you can easily replace it if you have the screw driver. the cheapest screens ive seen are from http://dealextreme.com/

yes they are reliable, yes i have ordered from them very often. just expect 3 week shipping, sometimes 4.

Sending it into Nintendo would probably be your best bet, especially if you've never had experience replacing the touchscreen. They would probably charge you (I've heard around $60, but I'm not positive) and there is also the possiblity you would get a refurbished system in return.

sure if you want to spend $60+ on it, go ahead.

best bet? no way. replacing it yourself is easy. there's no soldering.

The screen replacements are dead cheap.

You can try Deal Extreme, but be warned: getting a replacement will take a VERY long time!

Oh, I've ordered from DealExtreme before; I don't mind waiting.

Are there videos and instructions for the screen replacement?

One thing that seems worth noting is the possibility these cheap replacement screens are of poor quality and won't give you the same performance as a stock Nintendo DS. There could be all sorts of issues with such things as motion blur and other performance issues.

I'd at least contact Nintendo and explain that it happened during normal gameplay rather than abuse. They've been known to do repairs free of charge on occasion when outside of the warranty.

I just replaced both screens and the touch screen on a destroyed donor DS lite with parts from Dealextreme and they look pretty good. I've got all of 10 minutes into them so far, but there isn't much difference visually to my sons original nintendo screens. And the touch screen works great - super cheap and easy to replace if that's all you need to do.

I'd hate to waste my time and money, but I guess I'd better just pick one and hope for the best.

I just picked up an original DS with a broken top screen for $7 (with charger) yesterday, so I might be making another purchase from dealextreme soon.

I never did get around to placing that order. Any other thoughts?
