    Default Capcom CPS Changer

I was surfing youtube and thought maybe there's a vid of the rare and ever elusive CPS Changer and low and behold there is. This is the first time I have actually seen one in action. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the CPS Changer was Capcom's "home version" of it's CPS boards for the arcades. Think of it as Capcom's Neo Geo AES system only rarer since they didn't have as many of them as the Neo Geo AES. Anyway here's the vid:

CPS Changer is dead to me because all it's got are beat-em-ups, and at this point anybody can own their own Final Fight (and in multiple arcade-perfect formats, even at the time), or Captain Commando, or whatever. Oh wait, I lied, the system has some quiz games too. AWESOME

Capcom really dropped the ball in not adding some shooters, be it airplane variety, or Mercs, Forgotten Worlds, or Three Wonders. Why the first two only appeared on the Genesis is beyond me - maybe they were only porting things to personal computers that were sure of selling.

Would have been better if it was for CPS-2. That would have been awesome.

So about what do CPS changers and cartridges go for? I think I remember seeing one (no carts) on eBay for $300, but I don't know how that turned out.

It would be interesting to compare the cost of a CPS changer to a supergun; at around $200 for the supergun and $80-140 for the game boards I'm not sure which one would be more expensive. I imagine the rarity of the CPS Changer stuff would drive the price over the range of the supergun setup.

I believe it is, though I definitely may be wrong. It had proprietary cartridges.

CPS Changers, while technically being Superguns, are collectible, as is the software designed for it.
It'll probably be much more expensive than just getting a setup to play the actual arcade versions.

It's CPS1 only, although it did get a port of Street Fighter Zero.
They aren't particularly expensive to buy in japan, from what I've been told.
They use SNES/SFC controllers, which is odd.

You guys are living in the past if you think they are easy to find or cheap nowadays. I bought a NOS one about five years ago with several games for around $300 shipped from Japan. The last few system and one cartridge starter packs that have sold on Yahoo.JP have gone for over a thousand dollars each not including shipping. The games easily go for $300 and up when and if they appear which has been very, very rarely in the past two years.

You're right though, if you have a super gun or a Jamma cab, there is not too much point in owning a CPS Changer except for collector's value and rarity.

Check it out. I was on the neo geo selling forums and that guy on that video is selling his CPS Changer. Here's the thread:

It's the same guy as you can see at the last few posts of that thread where someone asks and he admits it's him.

CPS Changer can play JAMMA boards? I wonder if the SNES controller supports a D button if you connect an MVS board to it.

It could only be a mvs-1 since it's the only one with mono sound.

Prices on the CPS Changer seem to fluctuate from what I've seen - some people seem to get great deals and others hunt for years and don't find them at any price.

On JAMMA ability - We've all read about the CPS Changer being organized so that it's not at all easy to wire up coin buttons. NFG Games has a good bit of information on JAMMA in/compatibility in the CPS Changer, here. What it boils down to is that yeah, there is an adapter, but it's not exact JAMMA spec. At the very least that will restrict one's choices in using JAMMA boards in the system.

Granted, it's expensive to add things like S-Video (which I should have!) to a Supergun (the guy who made mine would've charged something like 50 GBP, IIRC; I may be wrong), but the results are much nicer than the CPS System's is likely to be.
