Default Gimme Some Obscure Horror Game Titles...

I'm talking stuff a bit more obscure. Not Resident Evils, Silent Hills, Fatal Frames; I'm talking stuff that came out that not a lot of people know about but are still good games. I played a game for SNES a while back called Nosfaratu that I knew nothing of. It wasn't a hugely awesome game but the animations were solid and the game was interesting, it mixed puzzles with combat and such. This game inspired me to think about what other possible horror games came out, it could date from NES to PS2 and on.

You could start with the Obscure 1 and 2, both are available for PS2 and both are rather enjoyable games.

There's also Martain Gothic on PSX, it suffers from poor controls, but it's an enjoyable game that has a decent storyline and a great environment.

I've been told that Nightmare Creatures is a bit of an obscurity, but I'm not sure.

Also, shouldn't this be in either Classic or Modern instead of Off-Topic?

/v/'s list of scary, horror and mindfuck games

Proving that 4chan is not a complete waste of time and energy.

If your PC is up to it, I'd start with the Penumbra series, then Paranoia (Half-Life mod)

Good stuff there. Eversion is a neat little game, not exactly scary but it does have a creepy vibe about it. It's free too!

Everyone seems to like the ol' NES Sweet Home.

And how about the SNES Clock Tower?

For the PC, you ought to check out Waxworks.

I actually did recently complete the first Nightmare Creatures on PSX & yes, this should be in either or classic or modern, but since I couldn't decide which, I put it here.

I didn't know there was a Clock Tower for SNES, I did play the first one on PSOne and completed it recently (without a walkthrough, might I add, friggin things you have to do to get the best ending!). Sweet Home looks effin sweet but is there a translated rom of it in existence?

I nominate the Japanese release LSD on the PS1 to fit the bill of "Obscure horror game title".

If you don't think it's a horror game then you probably haven't played. Cacophony of ridiculous hippie colors and random screaminly discordant music will make sure of that. Yes, the music is random. The man who engineered it created a system where you randomly control it by what you do in the game. Just believe me, it can get pretty f*ckin' scary. The whole game's like a purgatory.

As the article says, there is indeed a fan translation. Same goes for SNES Clock Tower (which was never officially released outside of Japan).

I thought that the PSX Clock Tower was the same game as the SNES one?

There's one for Commodore 64 called Project Firestart. It's pretty amazing for a C64 game, and I don't mean graphically. I don't know why it doesn't get its due recognition in the history of the survival horror genre. I think it came out after Sweet Home, but it's probably the first game of its kind to be released in the West (and the developers likely had no knowledge of the Famicom game). It foresaw a lot of the genre's conventions.

Holy heck, they got all the games I was thinking of. Nice. Some of them I thought were insanely obscure (Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi, although I've just played and mentioned it here.)

They missed Deeeepu Feaaah (SEGATA SANSHIRO) on the Saturn (Deep Fear).

Things to keep in mind: They Hunger is just Half-Life with MORE cheese than usual, and zombies. More funny than scary usually, but still a good time. It's a series.

The makers of Afraid of Monsters (well, the maker) has teamed up with some other well-known HL modding scene dudez to create a new Half-Life mod, which will be groundbreaking for the engine I think. It's called Cry of Fear and it just got another bump towards completion - it'll probably be a few months before release. Hoping for a Halloween release but I doubt it.

I suppose Enemy Zero counts, except that it apparently sucks.

It's not the same as the first North American PSX Clock Tower game. In Japan there was an enhanced version of the Super Famicom version released on the PSX and Windows 95, the re-releases are called Clock Tower: The First Fear. Supposedly there's a film being made of it too.

    Here's the English patch for the SFC version;
    http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=clocktower

    Here's a video that shows all the extra stuff on the Playstation version;

It's a bit funny, but I consider Clock Tower to be an example to demonstrate the theory of Schrödinger's cat. Certain things happen only if certain actions are performed at specific times, and there are several different endings that you can get based on your actions. For example, if you explore a certain room you'll discover one of your friends dead, but if you don't enter the room you can come across this same friend alive later in the game.

The SNES game is the first in the series. America got the sequel, Clock Tower 2. The 2 in the title was dropped for obvious reasons, of course.

Also, there is Kuon for the PS2. I haven't played it yet, but its supposed to be pretty good.

I did like the idea of this, my problem was the pacing, and the fact that you couldn't speed up text or just skip dialogue parts altogether once you've seen them 3 or 4 times already. It took me a while to figure out that last scenario with Helen where if you dropped down the chimney you lost your gun, hence Jennifer dies at the hands of Scissorman (an example of entering a different way in order to save your friends).

Just saw some footage on Youtube, and it looks really nice.

Need to hunt this game down. Thanks for the suggestion!

i didn't check that massive list, so forgive me if this is repeated...

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream for PC is some creepy, messed up stuff. written by the Harlin Ellison, it's definitely worth some time.

Clive Barker's Undying (while definitely not aging well) still can be kinda scary.

Call of Cthulhu is scarier if you've read a lot of H.P. Lovecraft, otherwise it's kind of eh.

i know it's not obscure, but the first Siren creeps me out. :: shudders ::

the Ju-On game for Wii looks good. i'm definitely interested in that.
