Probably a windows 95/98 game, very much like Myst. You wake up in a crashed spaceship in the middle of a jungle; pretty much all I remember. Any ideas?

I'm thinking return to zork, but i don't think that's the title i'm looking for.

did you start off in your ship/house thing and went to different areas from there?

or is that return to zork? my pc memories are failing me =(

    ---
on second thought that's not it at all...
did the spaceship have some sort of tv that you could watch and there were commercials? commercials that had clues to different areas that you could go to outside of your ship/house thingy? if yes, i know what game you're talking about but i have no idea what it's called XD

I don't remember a tv but maybe books? Memory is to fuzzy. I'm sure when you get out and explore the jungle, you find some sort of temple.

    Nope

It looked like Myst, with pre-rendered backgrounds.

Well, spaceships and jungle in a Myst-like game... sounds like The Crystal Key a bit. Check this review:

The Crystal Key!!! Ahh memories...That game is an inside joke with my friends and I.

When the game first came out one of my friends bought it and had it for like a week and could not get past the first few screens. I thought that he just sucked and told him I could figure it out. So I sat down at his computer and two hours later after combing the first few screens (over and over again) with the cursor I gave up too.

A few weeks later I was at another friends house and just happened to see that he had a copy of The Crystal Key as well. I inquired as to if he had beat the game and he replied with a "Hell no! The game is impossible! I can't get past the first few screens." He loaded it up and turns out he was stuck exactly where I was and my other friend was. So a third friend who was present at the time said that he thought he could figure it out. So he took the game home and gave it back a few days later after giving up in the same FREAKING spot.

Was there a bug that prevented early copies of the game from working properly? That's the only thing I could think of. I would love to give the game another shot after all these years, because now I am thinking "surely I could figure it out. Surely there was something that I missed" but I doubt it. If the 4 of us couldn't figure it out years ago I don't see me getting any smarter.
If a god is willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent. If he is able, but not willing, then he must be malevolent. If he is both willing and able, then why is there evil? If he is neither able or willing then why call him a god?

    Surely you've consulted GameFAQs?

Nope! If I had been further into the game, I probably would have but it was literally right at the beginning. We were determined to figure it out but then slowly our ambitions died and we gave up... I probably would use Gamefaqs these days because I don't have as much free time or patience as I did years ago.

I'm gonna have to hunt this game down and give it another shot.
