    Default Amiga game impressions

I've recently been spending more time with my trusty Amiga 2000 and have been going through some of my games that I collected years ago, but never really played. Here are some of my impressions (assuming the disks still work)...

Pictures added courtesy of Lemon Amiga

    Mr. Nutz
After fiddling with my PAL Boot disk and waiting forever to load the game, the title screen comes up and some snappy MOD music plays. The game starts in an overworld similar to Super Mario World, but it involves bits of story and a few light puzzles. Once you get to a stage, it devolves into a bad Sonic clone. The game was obviously designed for the AGA chipset so everything is downgraded is a orange and yellow duotone mess...

Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon
Man, not all Cinemaware games are created equal! Crude yet colorful, the graphics in the game scream Deluxe Paint. After the title screen I stared at the status screen wondering what to do. I finally selected a choice from a drop down menu screen and I had to switch to disk two for a swordfight, then switch back to disk one. There may be a decent game buried somewhere in here, but back to the bottom of the pile it goes...

Sinbad is hilarious. Just wait until you get busy with Libitina, or whatever her name is.
The message you get after defeating pirates is also worth a chuckle.

Loved Sinbad. They really overdo the color cycle mode in that game.

    quality there.

The Bards Tale games had their best showing on the Amiga. I always tell people who are into RPGs to check out those games on the Amiga.

Here's my impression of Cosmic Bouncer. Now be prepared, it kinds of looks like a shadow rabbit, and sounds like a drunk guy trying to do a DeNiro by way of post-stroke Sly Stallone. But I assure you it's Cosmic Bouncer...

Sorry, I'll find my own way out of the thread...

I played a lot of Bard's Tale when I first got my A500 as a kid. I don't think I ever got close to finishing it. I remember liking Dungeon Master a lot, too.

    On the (action) RPG front...

    Times of Lore
I played this quite a bit on the C64 as a wee lad and loved the intro SID music. I never made it very far. Playing the Amiga version (and having the instructions and map), I'm really enjoying it. The Amiga music is a good upgrade to the SID tunes (but still missing that certain something), and the graphics are still based on the C64 version, but get a decent higher rez/high color upgrade. It's a shame that the GUI interface takes up so much screen real estate, but I am enjoying the feeling of exploration and the fear of getting too far away from an inn to save.

    also...

    Maniac Mansion
Another one that looks like a nice updated C64 game, but unfortunately my 2nd disk no longer works. I'll have to come back to it later...

I really should give The Bards Tale a proper go...

    Ork
A Psygnosis game heavily influenced by the Roger Dean/ Shadow of the Beast look, it pushes the color palette a bit, but seems to be a decent game. You play as a demon who can jump and shoot, with some light puzzles and item use. More level based than say Beast, I'll want to come back to it later...

le geek - do you have a list of the games you're running up here? Maybe we can start polling for games we want you to review. 'Cause you want to put your free time in the hands of weirdos on the intarwebz

People are talking about RPG's on the Amiga, and no one mentions Ultima V? Blasphemy!

    Crazy Cars
Take the Test Drive concept and shoe horn it with a 2nd to 3rd rate Outrun clone, and you'll get Crazy Cars. The frame rate is pretty low and the developers "spent" the color palette on the cars and the far background leaving the ground a garish technicolor gradient. Yet for all of its faults, it's kind of a fun game. That said, future racers like Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge blow it out of the water.

    Speaking of...

    Test Drive
While it seems primitive now, Test Drive does a decent job of simulating behind the wheel driving with shifting, all with a one button joystick. The in car dashes of the various sports cars all vary, as do the engine sounds. I never had much luck outrunning the cops. Staying within the speed limit when the radar detector was going "full" seemed the way to go. Once you get the hang of driving it's pretty hard not to win--even if the game insults you during your pit stops at various Mom 'n Pop gas stations in between stages--so you'll be playing for score. Also, get used to the road, the mountain and the cliff, because that's pretty much all there is to see.

    Time Bandit
At first glance, it's a Gauntlet clone with a two player split screen and varied world themes. After a larger sampling, there are hints of deeper puzzles beyond the simple "find the exit key" variety. The graphics are primitive, but they are charming non-the-less. I'm on the fence on this one. I may come back, but there are other games that seem more pressing.

Amiga has 2 button capabilities however even then... street fighter 2 and mortal kombat?

I've never tried either version so I can't say but I hear the ports aren't... great.

I'm feeling like there should be a Commodore 64 thread along the same lines as this...

    Unreal
Obviously a response to Shadow of the Beast, Unreal is a pretty game split into two types of gameplay. First is a pixelated variation of Space Harrier, but as a flying dragon. The control and collision detection are a bit rough, but the stage is generous with replenishing health.

The second type is a more traditional run to the right affair. Here Unreal not only mimics the art style of Beast, but the difficultly as well. I can complete roughly half of Shadow of the Beast, but this stage gave me trouble. I might come back to this one, but only after playing through some more compelling games first.

    Blasteroids
Blasteroids was a fun update to Asteroids that Atari released to the arcades in the late 80s. The Amiga port is solid all around with good graphics, music and sound fx. Power ups, multiplayer, different ships, multiple stages with boss fights...it's all there. I only wish it were a bit more generous with credits.

    Hole-In-One
With clean graphics and a simple mouse interface, this mini golf game seems decent, at first. Yet after playing a bit, the physics are too floaty. I was doing a lot worse that I would at real putt putt! It comes with three courses. Two are rather plain, but the Holiday course is inspired. I'm on the fence with this one. It's not a waste of your time, but there are better games out there.

    Super Ski
I was hoping for some decent faux 3D skiing with this one, but, alas, I will keep looking. The frame rate is low and the color palette is garish and blue (perhaps an ST port?). I'm sure there is some fun to be squeezed out of this one, but to the bottom of the pile it goes.
