Default Tony Hawk Ride - final nail in the franchise coffin?

So Tony Hawk's Ride was finally released this week but I'm not really hearing much buzz about it. In fact, I haven't heard *anything* about it yet. Does anyone care or is everyone pretty much bored to death of the franchise by now and playing Skate. instead? The skateboard controller definitely looks interesting but I have doubts about how comfortable it is to play with.

Also, news like this doesn't sound good either:

Tony Hawk died for me after the fourth game. While THUG and THAW were fun, yes, by this time they had it down to a formula. Nothing new, same old, same old.

Anybody go back and play the first game and see how primitive it is compared to later series titles?

Yeah, I bought Proving Ground and Project 8 only because I scored them on the cheap and I probably spent 1 hour total between the two. Almost felt like work trying to play them.

I had a blast with Skate 2 though. Hopefully EA doesn't run the franchise into the ground like how Activision did with TH. I'd really like to try out this new TH game though because I'm a sucker for accessories like this.

I never really liked any Tony Hawk after putting more than a couple hours into the first one I played. Underground was sort of cool but then it got boring quickly.

However, why is Skate even mentioned here? Never played the first one but the second one was worse than Tony Hawk every way but graphically.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

It won't end. We'll get Tony Hawk 3000 next, it'll be Tony Hawk on a hoverboard and it'll be as bad as Airblade was.

I am a Tony Hawk whore, I enjoy playing 1, 2, 3, 4, Thug 1 and 2, and wasteland. I enjoy picking them up every time, beating the game in a hour or so and then doing that to impress people as well. I have always enjoyed those games. Once it left to you actually had to hit buttons to do something simple I got frustrated on the series. I haven't played a new one since.

Tony Hawk Ride was essentially DOA from the start for three main factors:

    1. It's another big piece of plastic tossed into the fake instrument pile...
    2. Attached to a franchise that died the day Skate 1 released...
    3. And was presumed dead 15 minutes after unveiling when Project Natal was announced at E3.

I'm just curious how long it will be until the first injuries/lawsuits occur. I tried the board at E3 and have watched lots of demos since and for anyone older than about eight years old or who is not super athletic, this seems like a sure fire way to get hurt. Even a lot of the review sites have been mentioning its relative instability in their reviews.

I love the first one a lot and have beaten it many times, but never bothered with 2 or 3 (though I heard they are about as good). I tried 4, Project 8 and Underground and was not impressed by them at all. I just like the simplicity of the first one compared to the later ones, and I hated the missions in the later ones.

Tony Hawk 1 & 2 were great, 3 had better graphics but went down hill slightly, four was nothing special and thats when I stopped giving a crap. Tony Hawk has whored out his name too much and frankly the games never got better, just feature laden with repetitive tasks that bored everyone.

Well badass. I actually wanted to get it. I guess I will wait a month or so for the price to drop and get it from amazon.

My memory isn't the greatest, but isn't 3 the one where they pretty much perfected the formula? I know that's the last one I had fun with. I think they really started to suck when the focus shifted from timed levels to the free-roaming levels with an increased emphasis on story mode featuring idiots like Bam Margera. I tried Underground and Project 8 and found both to be an absolute bore.

I don't think the solution for getting the series back on track is a gimmicky peripheral. At some point you have to decide whether you want to play a video game or do whatever it is you're doing virtually in the real world instead of settling for a half-assed combination of the two experiences.

I actually liked 4 more than 3. 4 took the series in a different direction, whereas 3 felt just like 2 except not as good. Although I liked 4 and its roaming structure, I didn't care for Underground. Running around on foot is lame, and the plot is completely unnecessary. I didn't play any of them after that.

I loved the old Tony Hawk games, they were usually very good-excellent but started going downhill this generation with Project 8. I have no interest in "Ride" because if I wanted a "realistic skate experience", I'd pick up a real skateboard.

And I have to say, Skate is one of the most over-rated games I can remember. As a long-time THPS player I could never get used to its awkward controls and I hate it probably more than anything else I've played this console gen. Most of my friends who loved the Tony Hawk series also felt the same way, and I got a few "I can't believe you wasted money on that piece of crap" remarks.

    This.

THPS2 was damn near perfect for the time, imo. Decent presentation, fun levels, a good soundtrack, lots of moves, etc. Afterwards, I never bothered buying any other release. I'd try them out at a friend's house and stop after 5-10 minutes. Something seemed to be missing from the formula that was growing stale.

As others have said, the older ones were brilliant. The series needs a break and it a good example of what is wrong with some long standing series of games. Money comes before innovation or quality, and thus we have a new tony hawk game every year that brings nothing to the franchise.

For the record, I have vivid memories of the first Tony Hawk demo...the most played demo in my home ever....what an amazing game
