Default Ideal Super Nintendo tester games... not the test cartridge, smartass.

So I've got a bunch of SNES consoles and controllers, and I figured I'd test all the controllers and tag the "bad" ones - but it's not always completely obvious which are the bad ones.

I thought about it a little while and figured it might be a fun idea to pick your brains about a game that would test the following:

    D-Pad in all directions
All X/B/Y/A/L/R buttons in critical applications.
    Start/Select several times during gameplay
    Distinct stereo sound

Super Mario World seemed like a decent choice but L/R utilization is low.

Stupid idea? Fun idea? Urzu-worthy idea?

Starfox uses pretty much all the buttons a good amount, including L and R. Not sure if Select does anything, and Start just pauses the game though.

SF2 would be a good one. No distinct stereo though.

Space Megaforce actually has a controller test available in the options. It covers all the buttons, and the control pad, and I've used it in the past for that purpose as well.

Nice one, but I would say Mega Man X to test the buttons. Mainly because you can go into the option mode and go to assign actions to buttons and it will come up what button you pushed.

Beaten to it by a few seconds. I believe MMX has stereo sound as well (though it's been a while since I played).

The dig was me starting a thread for a silly reason

The test menu I've considered but it doesn't really "stress test" buttons. Ideally I'm looking for something that'd put the controller through its paces in a few minutes of gameplay. SF2 seems like the winner so far.

+1 for Space Megaforce, this is what I use for testing SNES controllers

It has a visual representation for all buttons which is pretty invaluable. Some controllers have problems losing contact with prolonged button presses and that sort of stuff is harder to catch, Space Megaforce makes it easy. :P

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

I'll have to try out Space Megaforce on the Powerpak.

    I second Star Fox.

You don't even need to actually play the game, the menu screen after the title screen lets you test all the buttons out with a mini window showing your Arwing flying through empty space.

Select is used in the game to change your viewpoint, or in the menu where you can select if you're doing training or the game.

My test for shoulder buttons is still Operation Logic Bomb. It's a top-down shooter, kind of like Commando but truly free-roaming. You use the shoulder buttons to pin the direction you're looking in. If the shoulder button's contact isn't stable, you'll start to look in another direction. It's the sort of thing you wouldn't think could be a problem until you actually have to play the game.

And that's why I like my Hori stick.

While we're talking about bad movie video games, don't forget Bebe's Kids! If I remember right, it uses all of the buttons in really weird-ass combinations (like throwing a powered up punch is L and X or something similarly counter-intuitive).
