I'm not holding my breath for the new Zelda in 2010. Twilight Princess was originally supposed to come out in spring 2005, and got pushed back to fall 2006. Nintendo is notorious for delaying games.

As for the DS successor having motion controls...the last thing I want is for me to be moving my DS around like an idiot while on a train or plain.

    The iPhone says hi.

In all seriousness, I am willing to bet that'll be the extent of the new DS' controls. Simple tilting, which seem cool for racing type games.

True, however the reason it was delayed was to help give the Wii a real boost on launch day. The Gamecube was practically dead by 2005 (At least here in the uk it was)
I reject your reality and substitute it for one of my own!

Gamecube was on its last legs in 2005 here in the US. I can count the number of 2006 releases on one hand. Also, I'm not holding my breath for a 2010 release either. Nintendo should do what they do, and keep delaying it until it becomes truly amazing.

Also got me thinking about the DS games that are played normal vs book-style. Well, with the tilt function, a game can do both and toggle between modes as per the user input. Just thought that opens a fairly neat avenue in gameplay.

They never actually stated that it would use accelerometers.
It's possible that the motion sensing could be entirely camera based.

It needs 3D to go with the motion control...

To hell with a new handheld, better the work goes into getting the new Zelda out before I'm 30.

They delayed Ocarina of Time too. It was originally slated to have a fall 1997 release, and was pushed back to fall 1998. More recently, Super Smash Bros. Brawl had a December 2007 release date, but was pushed back to March 2008. Due to Nintendo's past delays...I'm not taking this announcement that Zelda will be out this year very seriously.

Using the same technology already existing on a competing platform and one of their own makes the possibility fairly reasonable. Since they already have an established arrangement with vendors/producers of accelerometers, it just makes it more likely. I still wouldn't rule out the camera either. Hell, if it reiterates the touch screen, they could even put one (accelerometer, not camera) in the stylus... Now that would be freaky.

Apparently there already is a motion controlled game for the DSi using the camera. It's called Katamuction and is basically just a collection of 4 or 5 mini-games with the camera being used as a tilit sensor for 3 of them. You can read about the games here. Interesting.

I don't know how camera based hand held game play would work. With all the moving of the hands holding the system the camera would be moving too much to pick up proper control movements from the person.

The latest word from Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo is that they're taking as much time with the new Zelda as possible until it's "perfect".

Although this doesn't necessarily say the game isn't coming out before the end of this year...it makes it sound very unlikely.
