Default DS Successor to have motion control elements and Zelda confirmed for 2010

    http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/105/1058479p1.html

Okay, ign (ugh) but the news it self is rather exciting. Apparently the successor to the DS will see some form of motion control... what do people think of this?

Personally I hope it isn't too big a feature, blowing into the DS is bad enough never mind waving my hands in front of it. And buttons are a must, if anything the Wii and DS have proved that for some genres it's essential to have them.

Also, Zelda for 2010, Yaaaays! /end blatant fanboyism
I reject your reality and substitute it for one of my own!

I feel meh about motion controls on a portable console and here's why: one of the most pleasant uses of a portable console is during commute. However, motion controls are impossible to use in a moving vehicle. I already had to stop playing Spirit Tracks during my commute because the parts of the game using the mike are hard to control in the subway (too much noise, which is picked up by the microphone). Same goes for Wario Ware: Twisted, which can't be played in a vehicle.

Interesting, yet predictable. It depends mostly on the what/how of it. I could see the benefit of something similar to the iPhone/iPod Touch (safe/boring as that may be), but they can certainly take it too far and come off poorly for it. Wait and see, name of the game.

Is the DS 2 the DSi or another revision of the console?

I for one am ready for all of this motion control nonsense to end already. Its a fine gimmick and okay for some games but at least for me will never replace good old fasioned buttons and joysticks.
I honestly can't see it being practical on a handheld system much as Lady Jaye points out. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what it ends up like. At least its better than annouing the 97th revision to the NDS

    I also agree

I love both systems, but their unique control methods just don't have much to offer and haven't added much to my enjoyement.

It would be fine if they would just leave it to select games that would really benefit from it. Take the Wii, for example. Wii Sports is really funy with motion controls, more fun than it would be without them: success! LoZ: Twilight Princess, not so much, would have been better with just standard controls. Same with both Zeldas on the DS, I mean, they're still good because they're Zelda games, but I would enjoy them so much more if they just had standard controls. I love 2D (or 2 1/2 D) Zelda games, and it stinks that the last 2 now to come out have been ruined with Nintendo's gimmicks.

Yeah the whole reason Sonic Chronicles bothers me is that you have to move with the touch screen. Touching is not necessary to an RPG...

As mentioned earlier, tilt sensor motion controls similar to the iPod Touch is most likely. Portable gaming systems are too small for anything else to be feasible, and the thought of playing your DS from 10 feet away so the eyetoy\sensor bar can register your movements is downright silly.

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo; They do some pretty odd things. I would never have guessed how many hardware iterations there would be of the NDS back in 2004. I'm still with my silver classic DS.

Putting motion controls on a system with a built in screen is straight up retarded.

You guys make me very sad. I feel like I was sent back to witch-burning times. I'm glad Nintendo is putting motion in their next handheld, Monkey Ball with motion controls is surely better than a D-Pad. The DS touch screen has been used very well, so don't you think the same will happen with a tilt ability? I would never want to play Professor Layton or Rhythm Heaven without a touch screen. Of course the touch screen wasn't used perfectly by every company, that's how things go. You grew up used to buttons, accept that something different can be as good as or better than what you're used to, or at least be a great addition.

Anywany, I didn't see the graphics mentioned in this topic. Iwata said the next handheld will be very powerful.

You'd think so, but it really isn't.

Like I said, having the gimmicks available and being used by SOME games, when it makes sense, is fine. But all games do not need it. I would never want to play The Legend of Zelda with touch screen only, but now, I'm forced to, or miss out on 2 Zelda titles.

Just want to say that I don't think I said all games should use the touch screen.

Yeah I know, but it seemed like you were suggesting that we were all 100% anti touch-screen/motion controls, so I wanted to point out that wasn't the case for me.

I'm all for new things like this being implemented. However, I'm tired of it being used forcibly. Nintendo should make games around it, not shove it into old franchises where it's not needed.
